Forums - Sales - Sony: PSP Go sales are better than anticipated

The PSP Go has been the subject on constant scrutiny since it's October launch.  In October, the direct download-only portable launched in the US, alongside the highly anticipated Gran Turismo PSP.  Estimates put PSP Go sales at approximately 100,000 units sold, and overall, the PSP actually sold less than it did the previous October.  In Japan, the retooled hardware is less than half way through the initial shipment released last month, being outsold by the PS2 and Xbox 360 consistently.  At current rates, the Go's first shipment won't clear Japanese retail channels until April 2010.

Despite that, the PSP Go is apparently doing better than anticipated, according Sony marketing lead John Koller.  "We are over-forecast on what we thought we'd be selling on PSP Go, so we've been very pleased," said Koller in regards to the maligned handheld.

Koller said the focus for the PSP Go in 2010 will be achieving parity between digital and physcial release dates - an issue that has hindered PSP game releases thus far, with even some first party titles shipping late for Go users.

I'm not sure if this is a case of Sony having unusually low expectations or what, but it's definitely suprising to hear that the PSP is doing better than expected.  The PSP Go is available now, for $250.  Check the full Game Pro interview here.

lol. I didn't think expectations went that low.

Makes me wonder why they went with a 150k 1st shipment in Japan (only 65k sold so far, averaging 3-4k a week now).

better than anticipated my ass

If that's the case, then the PSP-3000 numbers must be incredibly disappointing since they are well under their estimated shipment numbers for the PSP platform.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

I don't want to know what their expectations were if these abysmal numbers are better.

They didn't expect psp go to sell gangbusters, it had missions laid out for it that it accomplished.

1. Generate buzz for the psp (Complete, after all here we are talking about it)

2. Test the waters of digital distribution, its going to be a huge factor for future sales and Sony is the first game company to really give it a test to see if people would accept it.

3. Make sony some easy money. Sony is making tons of money sold on each pspGO, it only shipped 150k in Japan? Who cares, at its price that would be like selling 300,000 psp 3000s, maybe more. It offset the ps3 price cut and now when sony cuts it to like 200 bucks, it will give it a big publicity shot.
