Forums - Gaming - Video Game series that are milked a little too much

Mario used to be milked during the GC days if you count spin-offs as part of the series.

and Zelda is in no way milked. there have been only 15 games plus a few re-releases in 23 years.

the most milked franchises that I can think of right now are Guitar Hero and Final Fantasy.

Mario seems that way because Nintendo has used a limited amount of their IP backlog (only 65%-75% of their franchises). They aren't pulling out the Donkey Kongs, Star Foxs, F-Zeros, Kirbys, shoot, Mach Rider...all that good stuff.

Zelda? Pfft. Haven't had a console one in 5 years, could be 6.

Guitar Heros actually destroyed the sales of a whole genre----that's milking.

What about Twilight Princess?

What about it? Came out originally on the Gamecube in 2006. Won't be another Zelda until 2010 the earliest.

How is Mario milked?

Mario has a lot of games, but milked implies old and stale and Mario is really anything but that.

Zelda is the same way.  There may be a lot of Zelda games, but each one brings A LOT new or builds upon the previous game (Spirit Tracks) so that it still feels good.

It's perfectly fine for a game to be a large franchise but just because there are a lot of them doesn't necessarily mean milked.

Now Guitar Hero, that is a great example of milked to death.

main line, probably.

but mario and sonic and the olympics? mario party 8? thats the epytome of milking.

There hasn't been a Mario Party since 8.... but I understand it was milked before.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games -- true, but I also wouldn't call that a Mario game, more just a cash in.

Mario Party 8 -- Yeah, but again, not really what I would call a Mario game.  It's exploiting his name just like the above, but you can't say Mario games are milked because of those two.

Final Fantasy, Guitar Hero, Need for Speed. And Call of Duty seems like joining this club, too soon.

well it have the name on it, u may say they get a main line mario that keeps it platforming roots.

but the name "mario"+"something" it's milked.

Call of Duty is heading that direction, also inb4halo!

I wouldn't say Mario is milked... but saying something like Mario Party is milked is no big deal to me.

It's not like Guitar Hero where it's literally the SAME EXACT game over and over with Mario- spins offs for Mario bring many new things to it, like party games for Mario Party, rpg elements for Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario, etc.
