Forums - Sales - Pachter talks GTA: CW low sales, future of Tony Hawk, Call of Duty and more

Can we somehow stop re-broadcasting Pachter's predictions? I'm confused why people are paying so much attention to this particular analyst... He just won't stop. o_o

Digitally distributed sales are not big, we can assume that fairly safely, they are always much smaller than retail, until we have evidence otherwise it's a valid assumption.

I doubt if we include others data it'd be doing anything special. The game just isn't what people want.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I'd imagine he has demographic stats for the DS, and is probably right in why the DS version sold weak - it isn't the right userbase for a GTA game. Especially when you compare its demograph to the PS3 or 360, who are clearly more in tune with the male twenty something types who buy GTA in it's droves.

He didn't say the DS was too casual or anything, just it's demographic didn't fit GTA. I don't see what conclusion you can make else then that, I certainly didn't see a lack of marketing and the game got strong critical reception. Has the DS sold any GTA type Mature games in large quantities? No...

The PSP is a bit more confusing as it has sold GTA games strongly in the past, I honestly didn't see any promotion for the PSP port so I guess most people just didn't know. PSP doesn't sell software like it could when the first two GTA's came out anyway I guess.

Saying GTA's core demographic doesn't line up with DS is one thing, and perfectly defensible I'd say.  But that's not what Pachter said, he claimed the majority of DS owners were 17 or under, which is something Nintendo's own figures suggest against.  I'd also say a good amount of GTA's core demographic is under 17 anyway, but that's another whole argument...

His take on the DS was a failure. Seriously if this is true why the is the PSP selling less? It's simple GTA fans didn't want it. Well most of them anyways.

Yeah because the PSP owners only dream about getting normal price late port from underpowered machine.

Uh... Monster Hunter?

Monster Hunter added great multiplayer on the move capabilities to the title.

It downgraded multiplayer.  Console versions had online.

Pachter doesnt like annual games because they arent fresh. Pachter wants Tony hawk 25 to go back to a controller. Pachter being Pachter.

GTFO @ all those ppl who are dragging the psp into this watered down, old underpowered ds port
i mean seriously dude, it's a ds game ported to the psp + it was released late on the psp. what would u guys expect ?

* Patcher is spot on with those statements

"Mature" games don't sell on DS. Games don't sell on PSP. Pick your poison...

No he isn't. If you read the responses here you would realise that the comments are wrong in a number of ways.

1) The DS audience is very wide in its demographic. Nintendo collect information on its consumers and find that there are many tens of millions of 'mature'  owners. It is easy to represent the DS as a kiddy machine because Nintendo gained the reputation through marketing (by Sega) in the early 1990s and because a sizeable proportion of its players are under 10. This reflects the diversity of the DS market rather than its supposed childishness. The DS sells 'core' games quite well and GTA may well end up with 1.5 million or so by the time its done, which should be seen as okay. It was never going to do massive amounts.

2) Secondly, the GTA game appeals to 'immature' people as well as 'mature' consumers. We all know that people younger than 17 own the GTA games. I guess that it must make up a decent proportion of the GTA market.

Both DS and PSP versions have been massively undermarketed and hyped compared to the main franchise. This is not surprising as the main series relies on big impact of graphics and 'realism' for its selling point. GTA 4 was all over the news as well as elsewhere. CW was limited to websites and a few phoneboxes (at least in the UK).

I also fail to see why a 'late port' should be a reason for poor sales when the game is actually very good. A good game is worth buying. I guess the lack of hype and the shallow 'graphics' factor is at least part of the reason for poor sales on both machines.
