Forums - Gaming Discussion - Insomniac's Brian Hastings speaks out on the PS3

Soulxxx said:Developers ARE working on the Cell, Developers ARE working on filling the Gigs, Developers ARE INDEED happy with the PS3, as Brian Hastings shows
Developers ARE working on the Wii, Developers ARE working on utilizing the controller (see Godfather), Developers ARE INDEED surprised with the Wii, as *countless* interviews have showed. EA of all companies has been able to do 4 out of 6 of their Wii games with good-fantastic controls. Not too bad for a company known for completely half-assed efforts. The industry is changing, but it seems not in a way that you prefer. Players are casting their votes with their dollars, and guess who's climbing up, with record breaking speed, towards becoming the majority's choice? Where have you been? The last 2 months the Wii has managed to outsell the ps3 and 360 combined worldwide. The PS3 launch for Europe in March nullifies this, but April has a chance of going back to Wii outselling both if the production finally increases, May looks even better. :)

Ok, I meant OR, not AND. How do you define "fail"? I say Wii will have sold more units than PS3 OR 360 by the end of 2009.* Disagree? *At lest in my native language the logical structure "Wii will have sold more than PS3 or 360" can mean two things: 1. Wii will have beat one or both of them. 2. Wii will have beat both of them. "Wii will have sold more than PS3 and 360" can mean two things too: 1. Wii will have beat both of them. 2. Wii will have beat the combined amount of units of PS3 and 360. What I mean is that Wii will have beat both of them.

Vanguradian1, Do you honeslty think 3rd party developers invest more resources on utilizing the Wii than the PS3's Cell?? Straight answer here. Yulegoat, Wii failing would mean: A) A severe drop in monthly sales (consoles). If now it's like 300K-400K worldwide, I'm talking about 80K-100K worldwide. B) Real lost of interest. People won't be speaking of it anymore (Read: Not as much as they are now) C) It'll lose alot of it's current 3rd party support. It'll also lose support from games made by 3rd parties... SRSLY, EA?? EA?! The guys who made BFME? They kept rambling all over how it's innovative and shit, I was so hyped I went and bought the game to find out that it was fun for the first 2 hours... yes. But after that? Now this is just me... I know there are some people playing it, but the hype for this game is GONE! Then they tried putting BFME2 it on the Xbox... I think I don't need to say anything about that. We all know how RTS games do on consoles, don't we? Now they're putting CnC3 on the 360. FUNNY. I think the Wii would actually do less damage to the game with the Wiimote.... but now that I really think of it... No they'd both suck real hard. Another reason for you to reconsider your standpoint is Ubisoft's and Nival's HoMM5... remember it? I do. I was so hyped, I bought the game, played with the campaign for like 3 hours, and got freaking bored! That's ubisoft for you.. I just hope I'm not misplacing my Hype for AC. But games like PoP actually did good so I geuss I'm not misplacing it. So don't take 3rd partys' word for what they say. Do you wanna bet? Edit: I've read your edit.. I'm not so sure how the 360 would do either. so I don't want to bet on the 360 beating the Wii. But I would bet on the Wii failing by my definition.

Planning on getting a PS3 sometime in July-August.

I would say "fade" is better term than "fail". I guess the sales peak of Wii will be in the end of year 2008. By then it'll be so cheap that majority of the people who were going to buy it at some point will also do so. By then Wii will have had many killer apps. However, I won't bet on the things you mentioned because I don't know how Nintendo will manage this generation. It doesn't matter how long the life cycle of Wii is because they make already profit on the hardware sales, so they could drop the price substantially before 2009 and make the sales boom for a short while. Then maybe the last wave of great Wii games will start to be developed. In the best scenario, Wii will be a lot like DS. The innovation isn't seen as the purpose itself, but a tool to make better software. So the constant pour of good software drives the sales for a long time. No, they wouldn't have to. The Wii isn't calling for a monstrous level of programming requirements to make a game. :) And if things stay for the way they are, the Wii will have 2.5 times the install base of the PS3 again within a month (going from 3.25 to 2.2 thanks to the european launch), probably once again having 3x the install base before June.
A) A severe drop in monthly sales (consoles). If now it's like 300K-400K worldwide, I'm talking about 80K-100K worldwide.
That would be the quickest drop in hardware sales in the history of video gaming. With the current outlook, I'm willing to bet that sales won't start dropping even moderately before June, that's as far as I'm willing to stake my neck out for a "bet", trying to be a very conservative person. :)
B) Real lost of interest. People won't be speaking of it anymore (Read: Not as much as they are now)
It practically has to drop, the Wii's gotten more positive press in the last 5 months the PS3 or 360 could ever hope to achieve thanks to the wiimote and Wii Sports.
C) It'll lose alot of it's current 3rd party support. It'll also lose support from games made by 3rd parties... SRSLY, EA?? EA?! The guys who made BFME? It'll lose a lot of 3rd party support? Odd. We've had more 3rd party support announced this year for the Wii than we have for the 360 and PS3 combined. :o We'll have to wait for Batallion Wars 2 to give a proper judging to the Wii's potential for strategy games. C&C3 was designed and running before Wii came out, so that's not exactly a reasonable comparison. ;) And yes, EA. 4 out of the 6 games they've released for Wii have turned out VERY well, some actually consider the "port games" SUPERIOR to their "HD" bretheren. Read people's input on Madden 07 and Godfather. I admit they flunked hard on NFS Carbon and apparently MOH:Vanguard. (noo! I flunked!) :( I don't have a clue to what BFME2 was, so I'll have to avoid an answer until that's clarified.
Another reason for you to reconsider your standpoint is Ubisoft's and Nival's HoMM5... remember it? I do. I was so hyped, I bought the game, played with the campaign for like 3 hours, and got freaking bored! That's ubisoft for you.
If HoMM5 = Heroes of Might and Magic 5, then I agree with you, it was a strong disappointment. :-/
So don't take 3rd partys' word for what they say.
Does that mean we can take the 3rd parties commentaries regarding the PS3 and 360 out of account as well? :) Seriously, I admit the Wii is the weakest so far this year with a quality "hardcore" lineup that the 360/PS3 are offering or are going to offer this year. Some great first party games and some gems from the 3rd party later this year are *probably* going to be it. Consider the other hand now. Several big titles named "Brain Training", "MySims", "DDR - The Hottest Party" and a new Guitar Hero for Wii, along with who-knows what else from Nintendo OR any 3rd party suprises, and suddenly the odds change, with the 360 and PS3 lacking the variety and quality for the less-than-hardcore crowd.

Fade is the word Hastings used.. interesting, isn't it? You're saying the Wii will have killer apps... How can they kill with lame graphics? Have you seen Marble Mania?? OMG. The graphics are ok for such title, but is it really worth a purchase??? Is it a Killer App?? I don't know... I do know that whatever killer apps you're talking about will probably also make an appearance on the PS3 or 360 first, and with the killer graphics and the fact that there are more GRAPHICS WHORES than GAMEPLAY whores out, I think they will sell better to the GRAPHICS WHORES.

Planning on getting a PS3 sometime in July-August.

Oddly enough, Wii Sports has been a bigger killer app for Wii than Gears of War has been for 360. Go figure. :) "Killer App" is determined by "people need console x to play this game" in mass quantities, nothing more or less.

Vanguard1, Unfortunately I have to go.. don't think even for a second I'm backing down or anything.. I will return with my answers. See ya later...

I'll take you at your word, as I'm in the same boat.

Really, wow, ok, so, I guess, the Sims, one of the more popular games, at the time was an amazing peice of artwork. Tetris, which is always popular, just beautiful, there is a whole huge list there which i cant be bothered going into.. PS: For the hardcore game Quake always had shit graphics, although was the first '3d game' that i had played, and was just an amazing experience (Specially online!!), tho i always prefered duke 3d in the graphical department. Its not about graphic whore, or gameplay whore, its about the experience. Anyone who says the Wiimote is a fad, bah, it could be, but apparently the nintendo d-pad was, and dont forget the atari, probably the motorvehicle was as well (why wouldnt you want to walk?) PS: We have all gotten along without great graphics before, and people remember that, sure when i see xbox/ps3 games, i think 'fuck thats great' then i remember, 'fuck that is expensive, and i have a huge loan'...
