Forums - Gaming - Pachter on 2010: No Next-gen Announcements

Not content with his lacklustre 2009 predictions, analyst Michael Pachter has claimed that 2010’s projected software sales strength will see talk of the current console cycle ’stifled’.

Pachter, co-writing this article with Edward Woo and Chris White, believes the start of the year will see big sales:

‘We think that it is likely that sales will begin to grow in February, hit high single digits in March, and hit double-digit growth from April through October.’

He continued:

‘Once sales begin to grow sustainably, chatter of an end to the current console cycle will likely be stifled, and we expect investors to again grow interested in the video game publisher stocks.’

Pachter had already talked of how the next generation of consoles were as far away as 2013, but it’s probable that he’s not so sure now after 2009 fell way below his predictions if you note his usage of ‘likely’.

So he's admitting his Wii HD predictions are wrong?

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I suppose so. I bet that he will say that they were speculation and not an actual guess.

@CGI-Quality Seems about right to me. I suppose hardware revisions to current consoles wouldn't count with his prediction right?

That has been the dumbest prediction of them all.  The Wii consumer isnt about to replace thier Wii only 5 years in.  I suspect they will be the hardest consumer to convince to upgrade. They didnt really care about power when they chose the Wii why will they then care if a new Wii comes out that is HD.  Games wouldnt be backward compatible so it would be a disaster and Nintendo knows that.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

I think what he's saying is that no company will release any more info on next gen consoles, because they want to maintain the momentum of good software sales.

They wouldn't want to distract the consumer or make consumers wary of buying games/ a console.

Well, I guess two things

There will be a PS3 Slimmer released near of the ps4 release with the price tag of 150~100$.

Wii will get a true rainbow of colors by middle 2010.

That would be good let this gen last a little longer.

I think he will be wrong, sort of. I expect Microsoft to have a new rebranded Natal 360 that will be effectively the start of the next generation, even if it's not a technical upgrade. If they don't, I don't see Natal getting very far.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.
