Forums - Sony - Sony PSN Premium Pay

Sony is treading on a thin line here. The question is are they adding services to the premium subscription or are they taking current services away.

That question was answered before it was even asked. Where have you been? See the OP for your answer.

Neither, its a hypothetical question brought up by the OP. I'd say Sony should keep Qore as the 'premium' subscription, but leave all current features free. As for what I'd pay, well I'm not subscribed to Qore currently as I don't think its worth it, so I'd say I'd stick to the free version of PSN. Even if they added a game rental service, I wouldn't be interested.

Multiplayer is the only real area they can realistically create any decent subscription. They actually have a pretty easy route to charging as the nearest rival already has.

I find it difficult to see what kind of package they could put together that many people would be ineteresting in being charged for.

So most only want free online play? No one is willing to pay a flat free for unlimited rentals (movies and games) and music download?

Sony has so many things (games, music, movies, etc..), that I'm sure they'll want to leverage them into profits. iTunes does it, so why not the PSN?

Ok, so we've heard the rumors that Sony might charge for some sort of Premium PSN package. The current mold will stay free, but some kind of premium deal might be coming. So, what kind of package would you be willing to pay for?

I think they should do a NetFlix type of package. Their current video store makes no sense to me.Why rent 3 HD movies for $9, when I get get unlimited stream via Netflix for the same price?

because netflix's unlimited download has a pretty shitty selection.

Also, if they had a video game rental service for their PSN games, that would be cool too. Rent Flower, Pixel Junk Shooter, and more!

$10-$15 a month for unlimited video and game rentals, exclusive vids, etc...!! That would be awesome!!

So, what kind of premium package would you pay for?

...i would be fairly interested in a unlimited movie download subscription through psn.  netflix is great but the instant downloads is mostly crap and it's kind of hard to decide what movie i'm going to be in the mood for two days in advance.  a psn movie download could be great since it would be instant and they have a pretty good selection of new releases.    ...i kind doubt that's going to happen though.

a game rental service might be interesting but as i currently game swap with a friend the subscription fee would have to be pretty low in order for it to make sense for me.

not sure what other kinds of services they could add that would be worth my money,...fingers crossed for a pleasent surprise.

where does that come from? I don't know why you would need to know anything 2 days in advance. However, I do find it irritating that movies I do want to see are only on Netflix for a few months and I don't get around to it in time.

Its interesting how it went from "we will offer other offerings on PSN similar to Netflix" to "SONY IS CHARGING FOR PSN PREMIUM"

...

What do you mean?  Sony representatives said themselves they are looking into offering new services in a premium/subscription service....

They did clarify to say that all current offerings would stay free, though.  I guess your post seemed to say they never said this or something...?

The only other thing I can think of that charges a monthly fee already is Home clubs.

sorry, i'm not sure my sentance was clearly phrased.

on the one hand, instant downloads are immediate but the selection is pretty limited.

on the other hand, i can an incredible selection from the discs part of netflix but since it takes a day to mail the disc in both directions i have to guess at what movie i'm going to want to see about 2 days in advance.

since, imo, the movie selection on psn is pretty good (or at least better then netflix's intant downloads) there is a potential to have both the immediacy of downloads and a good selection of titles.  for the right price i might buy that.

If you offer movies and game rentals, why would people keep Netflix? Seems like Netflix would get shafted in the deal. When one looks at monthly subscription models, what can you possibly offer for $50 a year, to account for the loss of revenue on the per-item basis?
