Guys, I have a couple problems. First, I’m having some extreme discomfort in my genital region. Second, I just spilled Coca Cola all over my cat which is now experiencing severe convulsions due to a Coca Cola allergy. I don’t think my genitals or convulsing cat can be helped, but perhaps we can talk about this… THE GODDAMN NUMBER RATING SYSTEM!!! (capslock uninitiated)

I think you know what I’m talking about, summing up a game in one, convenient, lazy score. It just brings my blood to a boil! Look at Metacritic, Gameranking, every credible review website, and Edge magazine; they all fall for this shallow system of putting numbers up instead of putting full emphasis on the words and thoughts in said review.

It is my opinion that vgchartz should get rid of the numbers and only put up the words!!! (Except, of course, the reviewer is writing in binary code)

I’m not gonna say anymore because this is a moot point. I have made a thread for discussion and a poll for voting.

Please, what do you think?

To mods: I think this one's okay... (crosses fingers)

I agree with you, but it'll never happen. In order for our reviews to be taken seriously, we have to retain those useless number scores.

A. You aren't amusing.

B. I like the # review system. Sure, a 7,8, and 9 are all subjective. However, if I read consecutive 4/10 scores, I know that a game will be bad. They're helpful in that respect.

A.

B. I understand that they're some benifits to the # system but what does a score do that a quick read doesn't?

Helps with laziness.

I voted no. It's a bit like when the Aussies voted in a refurrendum on whether to become a republic. Most people wanted to become a republic, but they didn't like the alternative option to staying under the British Monarchy that was put forward, so the majority ended up voting against the republic proposal.

I don't like the number rating system the way it is right now in the gaming world. But all entertainment reviewers use a "quick reference" guide to the overall outcome of their review, and so should games. Perhaps a star rating is better. 5 stars which can only be further broken down by 1/2 stars. KZ2 and MW2 and Uncharted 2 and AC II and Mass Effect 2 and , and, and can all get 4 1/2 stars and the world won't come to an end. They can even get 5 stars, because 5 stars doesn't mean perfection, unlike the implications of a 10/10 or a 100.

Less is more really. It would be nice if VGC tried to lead the charge in the maturation of game reviewing as a critical excercise.
