Its a testament to the fact that the biggest fans of Final Fantasy currently are its developers. However, constantly remaking Final Fantasy sequels/prequels and pumping out tons of spin-offs of the series just because you personally love the games does not make a solid foundation of a series.

I can't remember the exact person who said it, but one CEO of Square said near the turn of the century as he was leaving Square "I'm moving on because all the employees want to do here is remake the same game over and over again." Was he just bitter because he was tired of working on Final Fantasy...or perhaps did he see the writing on the wall? That Square's 'legacy' was going to be tied solely into that series so much, that nearly all of its other franchises would dissipate and all we'd be left with is that. And of course, Final Fantasy with Disney Characters.

I wonder, if Enix hadn't come to bail them out, if they would have even made it by with this mentality of 'Final Fantasy is god, nothing else matters'. Or if by now, they would have imploded upon themselves trying to make more and more expensive games that sold less and less.

I somewhat agree with this, I'm not too sure if the series can last forever. Sooner or later sales will die down and so will the franchise.

Its not easy to keep a franchise fresh for decades, even one decade. Square Enix relies too much on the Final Fantasy franchise.

They are developing less new IP's and doing too many FF and Kingdom Hearts spin-offs.

If they want it to last that long, they need to give the series a damn break. Stop releasing so many spin-offs every year, make some new IP's or something!

I would say Dragon Quest would outlive Final Fantasy without a doubt, as they're actually taking care of the series. However, I don't know what will happen to it if anything happens to its creators. Still, it's a much better example of how to run things if you want a series to last "forever." The most recent game, DQIX, will easily be the best selling game in the series. It remains to be seen how well the newest Final Fantasy will sell.
