Chrono Trigger. I played it for the first time in 2000 through an emulator. *spoilers ahead*
Once I found out that I had traveled to the year 600 AD, my mind was blown. I loved that it was the medieval ages, I loved the time paradox, and Dreko (the name for Frog that I used the first time I played) grew on me quickly.
Traveling back to the future only pulled me in further. The mysterious crest upon arrival immediately piqued my curiosity, I really wanted to know what was behind that door, yet I had no idea how much more gaming I had left before I'd be able to open it. The Lavos revelation was awesome, but immediately after that... what happened? Oh yeah, I only traveled to the END OF TIME. Fucking sweet man, who even thinks that there might be such a thing as the end of time?
I only got sucked in further with the Masamune, 12,000 BC, the epic battle with Magus, and all the story revelations that are revealed later in the game. The story is so complex yet it all intertwines so elegantly, it's unreal.
Other reasons that it's my favorite:
- ATB is the best :p
- Great characters
- New game +
- All the different endings
I've easily beaten CT over 50 times, I own it on SNES, PSX, and DS. It's such a brilliant game that I now replay it at least once a year out of principle. I'm only just beginning to grow tired of the game, but I still have things to keep me interested. I've yet to do a no item playthrough, tech only playthrough, no tech playthrough, and so on.
