Forums - Microsoft - Should Microsoft fight for Japanese Marketshare next generation?

MS is a US based company, so it is going to have more cultural ties to the US than the other two, therefore it should keep doing what it has been doing ; which is to concentrate on the US market with a bunch of shooters. To do the opposite, and put more emphasis on Japan would be fightingan uphill battle, which is entirely unecessary

Very nice stealth troll!

OT: No I don't think they should fight for the markershare. I feel if they make the nextbox cutting edge, RELIABLE and have a comparable number of Japanese-tilted games, I would bet it would come naturally.

If Microsoft abandons the Japanese market then Japanese developers abandon Microsoft.

Capcom will never in hell abandon MS.

And as long as Capcom make games for MS consoles, I'm fine :)

I agree, and they aren't the only ones either.  That is why I am considering a position change (see original post).  I am just trying to get a good honest debate going on here.

@ supercat, this is the kind of dissenting opinion that is needed to create discussion, thanks!  I do think that MS would do well to invest in some programming teams with understanding of Japanese tastes.  After all, those games can become hits in the rest of the world too.

MS has alredy done this crazzyman, remember the JRPG emphasis that MS had in 08?  It didnt get them very far.

Depends. Will Sony make a cheaper console and not ignore the Japanese from the begining?

If Sony didn't leave the door open for MS in Japan they wouldn't have gotten this far. If Sony smartens up and gets the Japanese intrested right from the begining then it'd be useless for MS.

Doh! Ohhhh man, I must go wash this egg off my face before it starts to smell!

The japanese consumer likes to save space b/c they live in tiny apartments. So, MS having these games w/ 2 or 3 discs wont get them very far. MS needs to expand its offering of downloadable games, as well as adopt BD based games in the next gen so that customers wont have to keep as many discs lying around.

Fortunately for MS, the above suggestion at this point looks like it may very well happen.

I do remember that, but I am not just suggesting a JRPG focus.  I am suggesting the aquisition of programming teams that are local in the market and have a real idea of the pulse it.  If they want to break the market, they should be trying to do it from the INSIDE.

@ Commonman, I agree about the reliable part, that's part of the "strong product" I mentioned.  I honestly think that MS has learned their lesson from RRoD this generation.  I don't necessarily think that is ALL it will take thougn.  I don't buy the "if you build it, they will come" scenario.  Perhaps though, MS just needs to "Build it" and then let the chips fall where they may, instead of trying to FORCE into the market.  That is what the topic is about.

Microsoft's bread and butter is with the the US and Europe.
It would be useless for them to try and win Japan. They tried it and it didn't work.

Next to the DS the 360 had the best lineup for japanesse gamers and were still rejected. I personally would live to see MS completely ignore the market and focus strictley on western gamers, but MS lives in a politicaly correct world and to do so would only create more animosity towards the company.
