For those among you that consider yourselves diehard Resident Evil fans, this port of the original Resident Evil Zero technically works fine (besides the aforementioned freezes). If you can somehow look past the franchise's many flaws, which stubbornly cling to the series like t-virus parasites, then Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil Zero is a cheap way to experience the original GameCube game.

With that said, there are recent survival horror games built on much more elegant gameplay mechanics, so it's difficult for me to recommend Resident Evil Zero. When you couple the awkward tank controls with horrible item management, poor pacing and a lack of scares, you'll come to see that Resident Evil Zero is better left on store shelves.

Rating Description

4.5 Presentation
Resident Evil Zero stutters before certain scary events occur in-game, which destroys the scare. Story is nearly unintelligible to Resident Evil newcomers. Poor character development.
6.0 Graphics
Pre-rendered backgrounds occasionally look nice but are ultimately dull. Let's just say you can tell that Resident Evil Zero used to be a GameCube game.
5.5 Sound
Very little in the way of music, and voice acting leaves something to be desired. This is more a result of poor scripting, however, and not a fault of the actors.
4.0 Gameplay
Archaic controls, bad item management and crummy pacing.
4.5 Lasting Appeal
Resident Evil Zero's many faults will not help draw players back in for a second playthrough.
4.5

The question we keep asking is ?Why?? Why even bother to re-release an old game on a new(-ish) format, and at a price not far off from that of a new game, without doing anything to bring it up to speed? For once, you can probably be thankful that a Japanese publisher has no plans to bring one of its releases to the West. We?re certainly not going to lose any sleep over Capcom?s decision, although we can?t help wondering why Capcom Japan sanctioned this release in the first place.

6.0 Presentation
Menu and inventory screens are in keeping with the game?s theme, and the cutscenes still look cool today.
5.0 Graphics
Not too shoddy, but underwhelming because we?ve (literally) seen it all before.
6.0 Sound
Strong, atmosphere building music and entertaining dialogue, if not always for the right reasons.
5.0 Gameplay
Miles behind the freedom of Resi 4.
5.5 Lasting Appeal
This really depends on how many times you completed the GameCube version earlier in the decade, but first-time players will get good value from what is a fairly long and challenging game.
5.4
Mediocre

its a lazy port and deserves this score, however this one of my favorite Gamecube games and recommend it to anyone who hasent played the G-Cube version..

forget that, go find the G-Cube version for cheaper

Even the gamecube version is a bad game, the "Take and drop" item system is awful, the story is pointless, the enemies are forgettable and the AI partner is basically useless. Now that I'm thiking Wht Capcom insits so much on this? It's great to have multiplayer but if I'm playing alone I'd prefer to have extra space in my inventory instead of a crappy partner like Sheva (well I played Darkside Chronicles and the AI partner here is worse than Sheva)

I....really liked this game.....;A;

I actually liked this game.

I remember thinking it looked stunning back when it came out. And pretty scary too...

Oh wow Resident Evil 0 is an amazing game. Sure it may not be a great port with nothing done to improve it, but that doesn't mean it was a bad game. Yes it had some pretty bad controls, like all of the RE games before RE4 but it is still a great experience. Not to mention it is one of the scariest in the series and definitely the most difficult. Argh IGN.

I liked that game as well...I'll admit though that the port seems kinda pointless, I'd rather have them remake RE2/3/CV or remake the first ones completely RE4 style.

I enjoyed RE0 and it was my first Resident Evil game. That game turned me into a Resident Evil fan and I enjoyed every minute of it. However, a port was very unnecessary. Capcom could have remade Resident Evil 2 or released the N64 version of Resident Evil 2 for the VC.

I think it's about time that Capcom puts RE2 on the VC.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

shame, i will still be picking this up though, when it eventually comes to europe early next year. I'm sure i can find the GC version cheaper, but then i would have to settle for a used copy (which i dont like at all).
