Forums - Nintendo - Should I buy Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor?

I'm not too familiar with this game (or series), but I like Atlus as a publisher, so I entreat you, what's your opinion of this game and should I pay the price of admission?  Is it your run of the mill JRPG, or is it more intuitive?  I've read something about it being in first-person, which I could definitely entertain the idea of.

Around the Network

Devil Survivor is accessible to newcomers. For battles, you first place your characters on the battlefield, like a tactical-role playing game. When you "attack" an enemy, the battle switches into your typical first-person turn-based system. You can have four characters on the field, and each character can summon two demons, so you'll pretty much have four different parties on the field. In order to get demons, you have to purchase them. You can also fuse them to make a stronger demon, and this is one of the best features in the game. You'll spend hours and hours trying to make your ultimate party.

This game has a lot of depth. You can unlock skills and add/remove them from your characters to alter your battle strategy. Attacking an enemy's weakness grants you another turn in the first-person battle. Battles are fun, but the only flaw is the tactical part. Attacking from behind doesn't give you an advantage in battles or anything like that, but it does make some missions interesting.

The story is about Tokyo being in a lockdown due to a demon outbreak. You and your friends must make contracts with demons to survive the lockdown. There's a bunch of other stuff, but I won't spoil it. It's good and gets more interesting as you progress; the characters are lacking though. There are different ways to approach the story which alters the ending and warrants multiple playthroughs.

Overall, I recommend it.
