Forums - Gaming - Will Final Fantasy XIII revive the JRPG's in the West?

Let me just say: WRPG's suck.

Currently playing: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, NBA2k11, Metal Gear Solid, Picross 3d

I think FFXIII will sell reasonably well, but not do much for the JRPG scene. Rather, it will reinforce "JRPG stereotypes" to people who are generally bored with the FF-jrpg genre or avoid JRPGs almost altogether, and the good JRPGs with quality gameplay innovation will still not be given the time of day by many a gamer turned off by the idea of playing another FF game, especially one that does not boast the budget and eye candy of FF.

To those who love FF, and just love FF because its FF.... other JRPGs probably wont seem nearly as good... I doubt we will see many coattails. With the exception of 12's gameplay (which I liked a lot, even if the story was meh and VO was PUKE - and which doesnt count since its gameplay has been tossed out the window for future design) FF series has not had anything major going for it since 7. Except GFX.... Square beats everyone in terms of GFX/Rendered cutscenes.... and GFX and rendered cutscenes make fans and sell games.

Though the list includes some SRPGs as well.. franchises and games such as Persona, Disgaea, Agarest, Ar Tonelico, Valk Chron & many more beat FF games since 7 in almost every respect, except GFX and cutscene budget. Especially in terms of real innovation, FF cannot hold a candle to the SMT Persona franchise. With the exception ofc of FF12's actual gameplay which was outstandingly good, and done by the same designer who did Vagrant Story which was also awesome... with a better story and characters it could have been an all time great easily.. but unfortunately most of the talented people in those departments have left SE over the years.

My answer is yes. FFXIII will revive the JRPG genre.

And....your point?  Don't see anything new in that commercial I didn't already know from media announcements or screenshots for the game.  And it just seems like the typical FF game to me.  In fact, I think Xelloss said it best.

In Japan, there will be a certain fanbase who will buy this game because its a Final Fantasy game and a major RPG.  But after the media blitz is over, they'll move on back to Pokemon, Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter, as well as the horde of other smaller RPGs on the DS and PSP.  In other words, FFXIII isn't going to be anywhere near the hit people (and Square) thinks its going to be.

Hence why SquareEnix has been focusing, even hinging, this game on being a success in America.  However, there's some major problems on that front as well.  The market here in the west is no longer Japanese driven like it was with the PSX and PS2.  This isn't like the days of FFVII and FFX, when all the Playstation (or any system) needed to do was slap 'Final Fantasy' on a few videos and have their system sell.  And unlike FF games in the past, the fanbase for this game isn't as big.  And FFXIII isn't 'one of a handful of good titles' coming like the PS2 had in its early years.  Now its coming 4 years into the consoles life cycle, with heavy competition.

Other games are much more popular in America and FFXIII is more than likely not only going to see less sales than expected, but possibly lose sales to a major FPS or action title released near or soon after its launch in America.  If another game on the scale of Uncharted, Halo, God of War or even Assassins Creed launches near FFXIII, it could be in real trouble.  And there's more than a few major PS3 titles coming out in the beginning of 2010.  Like say...Bioshock or MAG.  I can guarantee you the majority of western PS3 owners are more interested in those games than FFXIII currently.  And as well all know the majority of owners of the 360 are not in love with JRPGs....

In the end of the day, FFXIII is just going to be the same thing.  SquareEnix trying to sell the next major FF game with bigger and better production values.  But only capturing a certain 'core' market.  But it remains to be seen if that 'core' market is bigger or smaller this time.  As we've seen with nearly all other HD graphic heavy JRPGs....its been smaller up till now.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I despise both WRPG and FPS. There must be people like me out there.

Point is xxain, the PS3 has and will have the same amount of JRPG's as the 360. I wasn't trying to start an argument with you I was just implying that both systems are equal.

Well, there's tons of smaller JRPGs like The Last Rebellion, Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll, Ar Tonelico 3, Atelier Rorona, 3D Dot Games Heroes, and Trinity Universe that are all PS3 exclusives at the moment.

Point is, the PS3 has gotten far more new JRPGs announced for it and will continue to.

No.

JRPGs not named FF have never sold that well... No final fantasy game has helped the genre as a whole.

If FF:XIII can't revive the JRPGs then JRPGs are basicly done and niche in the west.

Games Like Dragon Age, Fallout, BioShock, Mass Effect, Oblibion are showing who the real RPG masters are.

And it's not the green/blue/pink haired teeny bopper team.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

And again, JRPG's just take too much money to make in order to be profitable.

It's hard enough to make an 8 hour game be profitable, how much harder do you think it is to make a 60 hour game?

Your general AAA game is a GIANT risk unless it's part of an already established franchise (and even then there's still risj).  Making a AAA game means a giant investment, giant risk, and anywhere from little to no return to a decent return unless you're a runaway hit.

Because of Final Fantasy, every game must at least meet the game bar that game sets or else you will look absolutely inferior regardless of how good the game actually is.

If you don't have infinite time and money that just isn't easy to do and makes a big risk even bigger.

Until making HD games is cheaper (and that isn't going to happen any time soon at all), console JRPG's are going to continue to come around less and less.

Oh, and one thing I did forget to mention is that just like how the DS and PSP are immune to this, the Wii is too, though not in as big as way.  A JRPG will get released on the Wii and still be compared to Final Fantasy, but people will also go easy on it because it is the Wii.  So you can still make a console JRPG on the Wii for a reasonable budget and at least have a justification for not looking as good as FFXIII (but you still need to look as good as FFXII which isn't simple either).

This just proves that our current distribution method of video games has become a hiderance to the industry
