The other explanation is the reaction between volcanic rock and water, which would be good because that means there's water on Mars. So either way, it's a win win situation. Go Mars!

Yes, there is water on Mars, but how is that a win? Water is a very simple chemical substance made out of very abundant elements.

Because if we were ever to go to Mars, water has a ton of potential uses, and the fact that people need it survive... well, if it's already there, that would reduce a TON of weight, and because of that, greatly reduce the cost. Not to mention the uses for fuels, and things like that. Just because it's a "simple chemical substance made out of very abundant elements" doesn't mean that it's not something that's very useful. If you're curious, my chemistry professor spent a whole class talking about getting to Mars, and water was a huge part in that. I can talk about it more later, but I have to go to sleep for a calc review at 7 tomorrow.

If by "ever going to Mars", you mean an expedition, then I guess you're right in that it would be really useful. But water as fuel? That really makes no sense to me...

Water on Mars is proven it is 100% there they have proven it a long time ago. And there is more then enough for a mission to mars.

I will explain you what water changes. Expedition to a planet when there is no water is complicated and much more expensive then with Water. Water is water. So you have something to drink and water for plants like wheat. And Water is Oxygen. H-O-H. So water is Oxygen for breathing but it is also Hydrogen. Hydrogen is rocket fuel. If you have Water you can simply fly to mars without having fuel to start from surface and with lesser oxygen and water. Because this can be easily without a problem be manufactured on mars surface through some simple containers with solar collectors on the top. Solar collectors make electricity and electricity seperates Hydrogen from the OXygen in the Water valso known as electrolysis.
And they found even Water on the moon enough for a moon base which will be eventually build if not by USA then by Russia or China. It looks like there is a race which will start in the next decades eventually we will see 5 moon bases in the year 2060 because of the Helium 3.Helium 3 will make fusion reactors possible. And 1 ton of Helium 3 could satisfy the demand of the whole world for one year. 1 pound Helium 3 is worth 20 Million US Dollar. on the moon there are million tons of helium 3 because it has no magnetosphere and the helium3 of the sun can settle on the surface. Helium 3 on the earth is not existing it would be almost impossible to get 1 pound Helium 3 on earth. The moon is actualy more worth then it would be if the whole surface would be full of gold and diamonds.
