System Shock 2
Aquaria
Plants Vs. Zombies
Left 4 Dead 1+2

If you like strategy games, I used to play Rise of Nations and Rise of Legends quite a bit. Both are great.

If you don't have it for the 360. You need to get Viva Pinata.

One suggestion for Strategy games that has been overlooked here is

Sword of the Stars - Ultimate Edition + Argos Naval Yard

The game is totally awesome, basically it plays like a Total War game but in space. That is, it has a turn based strategic mode, and a RTS battle mode. Except, IMO its better than Total War.. which i saying a lot because I like Total War games as well.

It has tons and tons of different tech, and your tech tree changes from game to game so not only does it seem like there is always new stuff to discover, but you are always having to evaluate how to make the best fleets and defenses from what you have.

Ship building is detailed, and working your tech tree to construct the coolest fleets is just awesome. The stretegic mode has the perfect balance of macro/micro, you have some meaningfull control over your planets but it does not take a year to manage your empire each turn.

The game has basically been expanded and perfected over the course of several years and 3 expansions, and is now what I would consider an "unknown classic"... and it even has a full fledged strategic multiplayer.

A must have game for sci-fi fans who like Total War type games.

I guess bringing up some more strategy games that are worth checking out.

-Master of Orion (they are all fairly good, but have a steep learning curve)
-Sins of a Solar Empire
-Space Empires V (I really enjoyed this series of games, but suffers from being developed by 1 guy, so generally has several bugs and a regular flow of patches)
-Alpha Centauri (similar to Civilization)
-Gallactic Civ

sims 3

I liked Heroes IV (a lot), but you may want to start on Heroes III if you haven't played it yet, as it's easily the majority's favorite of the bunch. Heroes IV had mixed reactions since it had some major changes (that were later reverted in V, which was my least fav). Either way, if you're new to the series, prepare for greatness!

Civilization IV is awesome. Highly recommended.

Saying "better than" would be a difficult proposition. Rather, they have different strengths.

SoaSE is what you want for running a massive fleet in real time, the RTS fleet you micro in Swords is smaller, but more detailed in you select where exactly to shoot ( you can focus fire specific parts of enemy ships for example. In one game I had a nice cruiser fleet goin pretty early and was tearing it up, but a small fleet of enemy destroyers got some wierd dodging tech + rushed engines, ran circles around my cruisers shot off all my engines and since my weapons were relativly slow+ fixed position , easily finished them of once the engines were shot)

SoaSE has good system defences, and its alot easier to create barriers and choke points ( though not impossible in Swords, but more difficult since different races have different FTL drives so which systems connect to which can be different for each race). Also in swords each planet has a size, and planets have to be a certain size to support larger satellite defenses.

Swords has a better, more intricate tech tree, and you construct your ships and platforms from scratch... using different command, hull and engine modules. You fill in all the hardpoints etc...

So, better? Thats hard. Just very different in the feel of the game, and the way it plays.

This is my list of games to buy:

Deus EX (I have a feeling that it will be very expensive)

System Shock 2 (If it's not expensive)

You can get Deus Ex on Steam pretty cheaply. System Shock 2 is unfortunately out of 'print' so you'll have to look on EBay or Amazon Marketplace for it. You should get it for around £20, though (~$30).
