No Halo game has outsold GT3 yet.

No, but no GT game will sell what GT3 did again either.  Halo's on the rise, GT's on the downslope.  You people need to stop living in the past.

I think you may have gone a little too far here.

Seriously, it never ceases to amaze me how many people underestimate Gran Turismo's selling power.

Guessing 8m+ for GT5 and saying it won't outsell GT3 is underestimating GT's selling power?  lol, I think you need a little more perspective if you really feel that's the case...

How well did you expect GT PSP to sell btw?

You were saying Halo is on the rise and GT is going down.

As for PSP sales, I wasn't expecting much. It's in line with expectations.

Generationally, this undoubtedly the case.  Halo is rising above last gen (and even rising consecutavely, though I doubt Reach will continue that), GT in all likelihood won't.

So you expected GT PSP to not break a million before the end of the year?  Really?  I have to say, I was bullish on the game and it's even well undershot what I expected...

1. Which is why I keep saying wait for the game to release and hit its peak before judging.

2. Yes:

A) Piracy

B) Free download with PSP Go

C) It's a PSP game. No racing rig to play with.

D) It's a half-assed job compared to other GT iterations.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

I don't think it'll be a close race at all. PS3 is already crushing 360 even in its own territory (NA) right now. And that's before FF13 releases in Japan as PS3 exclusive, then GT5 worldwide, plus God of War 3. It looks more like a landslide to me than a close race.

MS has basically no answer to those juggernauts... It's pretty funny to see people always talking about NatEyeToy as MS main hope. It's a gimmick aimed at catching some of the Wii crowd, nothing more. If Eyetoy didn't succeed, there's around zero chance Natal sells millions. The casual crowd already has Wii collecting dust now, I highly doubt they'll rush to buy NatEyeToy.

Truly troll-tastic post! I mean, very interesting post with some enlightening points made. It's refreshing to see such unbiased, thoughtful posts for once.

I'm totally serious here.

Actually, GT went up since the PS1 days. Then it went back with GT4. It could easily be a fluctuation. MGS 2 sold high, then it went down with MGS3, and then up again with MGS4. Wait till the game releases, then judge.

I think big series are always open to generational shift playing with sales, the "first next gen" rlease almost always does a little better (though GT5P may work against GT5's favor in this regard then).  GT2's actually the worst selling "main" game in the series though, it hasn't been continual rise since GT1 (which is different from Halo 1 -> 2 -> 3).

The MGS comparison doesn't exactly bode well for GT though, MGS4 barely outsold MGS3 and didn't come close to MGS2.  Using the same logic, wouldn't it be fair to say the same will hold true true for GT5?

1. Look at GT4P's sales compared to 4.

2. MGS isn't as big as Gran Turismo. You're not taking the scale into account.

1. Trying to extrapolate GT5P/GT5 from GT4P/GT4 is inherently unfeasible for a litany of reasons.  Do I really need to go into it?

2. Bigger series tend to get more effected by userbase fluctuations, it's smaller series that tend to hold up better.  Again, look at Nintendo and how Mario Kart evolved sales wise from N64 to GC to Wii.  This works more in MGS' favor than GT's.

1. You said GT5P works against GT5's sales.

2. I don't see your point here. At all.

1. That was in reference to "first next gen" release.  GT3 was the first GT-anything to hit PS2, the same doesn't really hold for GT5.  I'm saying GT5P's sales are proportionately inflated thanks to being the "first GT-anything" on the console.

2. Userbase declines effect software, and they generally hit the top selling software hardest.  Mario Kart is a prime example of that.  MGS too honestly.  I expect it'll be the same story for GT.

No, unless microsoft can pack natal+arcade for 150$.

Fine.  We'll wait until release, and just maintain the unshakable truth about Microsoft's stronger 1st party dominance until then.  (and likely after then. :P)

As far as GT, the download was restricted to Europe and as it was a bundled code, it should be tracked with these figures anyway (VGC) no?  I mean if a Final Fantasy spinoff fighter can crack a million on PSP, why can't GT?  I expected at least million, probably closer to 1.5m now.

1. I still don't see how that would work against GT5's sales. It seems like a spin to me.

2. Explain MGS3 to MGS4 then. And as for Nintendo games, it's a special case. It became a big seller since the Wii due to the strong legs Wii first party games have. PS game sales are usually divided to different audiences.

I'll have to continue this debate tomorrow. It's getting late, and I need to get some work done.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

I think GT5 sales wont be as spectacular because GT3 really was the 1st photorealistic (or near photorealistic) racer. That was the reason I wanted a PS2. Now basically all racers are photorealistic and we have had so many this generation already. Unless you want a racing sim and you either dont have a 360 or have a PS3 you have had plenty of choices for photorealistic racers. If you have a 360 and want a photorealistic sim you have had two already with Forza 2 and Forza 3. So overall I believe the demand will be down.

Nevertheless hardware boost by GT5 will also be negated by GT5P release and the fact that when GT5 releases well over 30 million people will already have a PS3 and like 5 million of them will have GT5P.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Halo is bigger than GT now.  Wasn't last gen, but it definitely is now.  Honestly, I'm a little shocked you're taking so much issue with Microsoft's commercially stronger 1st party, it's pretty cut and dry.  And lol @ "true colors".

Game Sales
Gran Turismo 10.85 million
Gran Turismo 2 9.37 million
Gran Turismo 3 14.89 million
Gran Turismo 4

10.83 million

Game Sales
Halo 6.43 million
Halo 2 8.43 million
Halo 3 10.45 million

Halo is bigger than GT on the basis that it finally managed to outsell the lowest selling full GT game to date?
If anything, the figures seem to indicate that GT5 will outsell GT, GT2 and GT4 (on the basis that GT3>GT1, GT4>GT2). You could even say the figures indicate GT5 will be the biggest selling GT game ever, though that is highly unlikely as it won't be so heavily bundled. GT is just as big as Halo though.

I doubt that GT5 will crush previous GT games, but to say that Halo is definitely bigger is just plain false.

Real quick bit of info. According to simple math..
Since the PS3 US release day...
Xbox360 has sold 11.25 million consoles in the US.
The PS3 has sold 10.93 in the US total.

I would say they are both doing equally well in the US market and are neck in neck if you don't consider the 8 million head start the Xbox360 has had.
This is amazing considering the fumbles that both companies have had with this current console generation.

If we are going to bring up next generation, If both come out at the same time with similar price points and are pretty equal in starting features like this generation, It will be a very close race to first.

Nintendo did great, but I don't think they will do half as good on their next console. I have a feeling it will be a 3-way tie. With the PS4 leading the pack, only due to how much steam the PS3 is getting now.

People are always wanting to bring up the period since the launch of the PS3 and compare sales since then.  However, that is a mistake because the the initial 8 million represents a sizable saturation of the market in the US.
