Tony Hawk Defends RIDE, Calls Out Snarky Critics

'They were ready to discredit it before they even tried it.' says Hawk.

December 7, 2009 - World renowned professional skater Tony Hawk is none too happy with how the latest title in his long-running videogame series, Tony Hawk Ride, was received by critics.

The legendary skater recently tweeted that he was disappointed with the way reviewers scored his game. "Most snarky critics had their minds set before ever seeing/playing the game," he wrote. "I'm proud of what we created; it's innovative, responsive & fun"

In an interview with the Sudbury Star, Hawk would continue on to say he disagreed with the assessment that the motion board isn't responsive and that critics were ready to pan the title from the start.

"They were ready to discredit it before they even tried it, and if it didn't play exactly how they imagined it... then they passed it off," Hawk said. "I don't agree with people who say the board's not responsive," he add. "I think that they're just not giving it a fair shake. And I think a lot of them came into it with an attitude that it's going to suck."

IGN's own reviewer, Erik Brudvig, gave the game a below average score, saying players should consider a real skateboard before trying this new, peripheral-based title.

If you're looking for a realistic skating experience, you'd be better off buying a skateboard and heading outside. This one just doesn't cut it. File this one under "gimmick."

Tony, meanwhile, says he's proud of the way the title turned out.

"I know that [RIDE] is super fun, and I think there's a misconception that I just stick my name on a game," Hawk said. "I brought this idea to Activision, and I saw it through, I've been playing it every step of the way and I am very proud of it."

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

Some snarky comments by Tony Hawk there. I like it.

Seriously though, the Tony Hawk video game franchise was once amazing. I played the first three games to death and since then, the series has gone drastically downhill.

I have not played Ride yet, but I think that what he is saying in a sense is true about the critics saying to themselves that the game was going to suck before they even played it. This is because of the fact that the series has gone horribly downhill, like I said above, and it's also because the gaming media hates motion controls in general because they are, on the whole, fat and lazy.

Why can't they just go back to the "Pro Skater" series? Where is my "secret tape"?

And I saw a video for this game, I won't buy it.
