Forums - General - Jero! First ever black Enka singer.

I gotta respect Jero for breaking a mold within Japan, and revitalizing the tradition of "Enka" with bring a comtemparory look. Looks like he is a big hit over there, after listening to his first song "Eisa" I can see why.

"Life is but a gentle death. Fate is but a sickness that results in extinction and in the midst of all the uncertainty, lies resolve."

Maybe Jero's trying to play with the incongruity of his clothes and the musical genre in which he's operating, but his gimmick doesn't really do it for me. I'm just too accustomed to seeing singers in kimonos or suits.

Still, he does sing very well. I like Enka, so mad props to Jero for bringing attention to this art form.

I think it was his producers forced him to push that "image" forward as it was a big hit with the Japanese audience.

I starting to really love Enka, know any prominent Singers for that genre?

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out ;P

Well, there's the late Misora Hibari.  She had the most amazing voice, and is an absolute legend.

"Kawa No Nagare No You Ni" - My favorite.

Here's another clip I like.  Misora Hibari in the 1950 movie Tokyo Kid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaqnfrKwV7I

Aside from that, my favorite Enka singers are Ishikawa Sayuri, Kitajima Saburo, and Sakamoto Fuyumi.

Good job, little one. :3
