The reason why Western games don't sell in Japan is because most western game's storylines suck hippo assholes. Japanese people care about story. If they didn't then rpgs wouldn't be so popualr there. Also, the japanese don't like the mindless violence that western games bring.

Devil May Cry, Onimusha, and Dynasty Warriors beg to to differ.

The number of misguided generalizations being tossed around in this thread is pitiful.

Yeah, this has to be the most ignorant thread I've read in my time as a member of this forum.

its stupid some great games are ones made in japan (most never localized), White knight chronicles is the one im most looking forward too, but they have a smaller market, and games over here sell phenomenally and they dont touch em, id prefer listening to a 360 fanboy and ps3 fanboy go at it than his mindless nonsensical reasons gaimu fan boys would give...

To sum up what Square is saying ... "Forget your culture and your taste in games Japan, open up so our company can make more money!!!" lol

To which the Japanese should say "YES MASTER" or, for the self-aware individuals "Well, our economy sucks, so maybe we should".

@Montana

Games are seeing too many sequels too quickly, this will have an effect on things being remembered down the road.

This could lead to remembering brands instead of content or the games.

Example, it's easy to remember the characters from Metal Gear series but it has no content to remember.

While Before Street Fighter IV, people would refer to a quarter circle forward as a hadouken motion or even flash kick motion as the content of Street Fighter is used in most other fighters.

But for Metal Gear another game outside of Metal Gear can not use it's content, if anything Metal Gear borrowed it's content from Doom.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

To a country that's been on a Mayonaise craze lately, YES. Haha, my post was a joke anyways =)

Devil May Cry, Onimusha and Dyasty Warriors isn't NEARLY as violent as alot of western made games.

He probably should have underlined only the "mindless" part because I think that's what we was going for.

In fact, they like it more.  Its just that games sell better in America because we have, you know, 5x as many people here.  So everyone automatically thinks because the games sell better that means its more popular here.

There's actually a number of popular of franchises in Japan typically tied to stereotypiclly 'western' tastes.  Including sports, action games and even shooters.  Its funny how people overlook games like Winning Eleven, Ninja Gaiden and Metroid Prime when talking about these genres, as if Japanese developers and companies never even try.  And especially when it comes to shooters, Japan pretty much makes 100x more 'shooter' games a year when you consider all the various SHUMP, side scrolling shooters, third person shooters and FPS/action hybrids coming out of that country.

I think people aren't so much wanting 'western' games to get popular, but games popular in America to see the same success in Japan.  And well, I think that's asking a lot.  They're two different markets.  I mean, you don't expect 'Tamogachi Collection' or 'Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G' to come over here and have a repeated success just because they sold millions in Japan....right?

Metroid Prime is made in Texas. Or Washington. I forget which.

That's why I said 'Japanese Developers and Companies'.  Nintendo still commissioned it (and oversaw a great deal of the project).

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Characters in Western games are too often too ugly.
