But you can be bothered to type it up that you can't be bothered?

Good read, thanks.

I hope we'll see some more games pushing the PS3. I really wonder how much more can be done after Uncharted2.

What'll REALLY be interesting is to compare the (let's say) top 10 graphically impressive games from X360 and PS3 at the end of their life cycles. That should be really fun.ew

Keep your eyes peeled for God of War III, HEAVY RAIN, Gran Turismo 5 & Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Of course, this doesn't mention Killzone 3, Resistance 3 etc, etc....

Oh they're peeled! LOL.

CGI, I usually don't ask questions like this, but I'm really curious; You seem (from what I've read since I joined) to be really unbiased when it comes to PS3 and 360, so what's your take on the Wii? Just one sentance or so :)

I'd say of those, only an inevitable Killzone 3 may be better.  Heavy Rain looks great, but not above Uncharted 2 from what I've seen so far.  And God of War, be it their art style or what not, just seems no where near comparison to U2.  Gran Turismo will obviously look more realistic, but that's a racer so you can't really compare the graphic styles

if you can code the ps3 is better...
if you just make a game and trow it at the systems the 360 is easier thus better...

I'm not so sure it's that clear cut. What you will soon start seeing with the 360, as we've been seeing with PS3, is developers finally building new engines to take advantage of the 360's hardware. I'm excited for it, and some of the results are evident, like Alan Wake for instance.

This. Devs haven't been willing to do that for the 360 whereas it's seemed to be a necessity for the PS3.

That's changing now.

Double this.  So far, all the big games on 360 have used old modified Xbox engines (Halo 2 to Halo 3 and ODST) or generic already existing multipurpose engines (Unreal Engine 3) for the most part.  Now, though, Halo: Reach is getting a new engine, Alan Wake may be using their own engine (not sure), Splinter Cell will be using a new engine, and at the very least Unreal Engine 4 will be coming out soon(but that won't be utilized till the next gen).

HEAVY RAIN has Uncharted 2 beat on the charcater models and animation count.

God of War III IMO will best Uncharted 2 as well. The sheer level of detail will eclipse it, and from what I've seen of the demo, it's already looking that way.

Just my opinion though....

Yeah I hear ya.  Heavy Rain does beat it in that respect.  I guess maybe God of War 3 looks better in person, in motion?  To me it just seemed to be lacking heavily in overall textures and had an odd Oblivion look to it.  Of course this is all my opinion as well   I just think overall Uncharted 2 is and will remain the graphics king until Uncharted 3 or Killzone 3.

PS3 developers make progresses every day, some even managed to do FSAA (The Saboteur) or suppress screen tearing (Uncharted 2) using the SPUs. RSX may be a bottleneck for the PS3 but fortunately the Cell processor is an incredible piece of hardware. Basically, the more tasks you offload from the RSX to the Cell's SPU, the better results you get.

Interesting Indeed!

Wasn't it Sony's original intention was to use the Cell for both CPU and GPU? After the less than stellar performance, it decided to add the RSX? The other thing I recalled that kinda made news was that the Cell SPU to cache bandwidth was terribly slow and that they recommended using the main memory instead?

The original idea was, I believe, to not have a conventional GPU at all (imagine the developers then!).  However, in the end they struggled with Cell doing the lot and realised they needed to add a GPU of some sort.  Some articles I read at the time indicated that while the Cell might have done the lot (I find it doubtful myself) it was also a case of having something more familiar for developers.  Either way a GPU was added.

The upshot is that, in the worst cases, games just use the PS3 GPU limitations and all (which is why we saw the really bad ports early on, which effectively were using the PS3 in the worst way possible).  Things improved as developers changed code to better use PS3 architecture, but even now this is still an issue - for example I'd be willing to bet some of the Bayonetta issues are due to taking code for 360 GPU and just dumping it on PS3, with the resulting performance being poor because only the GPU in PS3 is being used and the Cell wasn't being leveraged at all for graphics.  The usual quick fix is reduce graphical fidelity rather than actually change the core code, hence the muddy port.

OT - good article, nothing new but at least clear and no bias I could sense.

For me, the worst offenders were the Ghostbusters devs, saying that they used the PS3 as the core dev platform, and then the game comes out with a lot of graphical problems on the PS3 version, and they say that it's because they had problems with the textures that they didn't have with the 360 version, and the cause was the RAM and the SPEs, revealing that they were lying and didn't use the PS3 as the core platform at all...

^did they say they didn't use the PS3 as their lead platform?
I thought that was simply PS fanboys looking for a reason?
