I'll add it to my list of things to watch. Right now I'm slowly watching Death Note.

To put simply this anime is average for 2/3 of it and then goes into horrible the last third...

It's not better, but it comes damn close. It has much better musicalization though (Shiro Sagisu is a genius)

I agree. It had its moments, but overall it's an average anime with uninteresting characters. Rei is as dull as pancakes without syrup, and Shinji is just an annoying, whiny character. Everyone in this anime whines and complains. The story didn't make any sense, and the ending was terrible. The only good thing about Neon Genesis was the opening theme, imo. Also, it was very repetitive; they follow the same formula for like 16 episodes:

*some military stuff happens
*Shinji whines about his dad and thinks about Rei
*insert some sex stuff and penguin segment
*Angel shows up and Shinji doesn't want to fight
*Asuka or Rei fight the Angel and something bad happens to their EVA **(if Shinji is fighting, he starts crying and whatnot, and miraculously, his EVA will get powerful)
*Shinji saves them and defeats the Angel

The sex part is actually relevant to what I saw, part of inner conflicts in shinji(watch the end of evangelion).

What most people forget is that shinji is a 14 year old kid with family problems and a personality problem, so the idea that an absent father calls you to risk your life would be pretty shocking to any normal person, not the typical anime characters like Goku tht wouldve just fought. If any one here wouldve lived the same they would be whining in the same way(though shinji kept it to himself most of the time).

Overall, I think the series didnt give a clear message, it was open to individual interpretations, the same way American Pie is to music as someone mentioned it here, but I think thats a good thing here. Anyway, the animation is very good and the music too, so I would say its a great anime.

The main thing to remember, for fans and foes alike, is that Neon Genesis Evangelion is actually an anime about childhood psychological trauma, and that giant robot battles and religious madness is the setting, not the story.

I like NGE... buuut, I don't think it's as "legendary" as some people put it to be.

I effing hate Shinji, Asuka and many characters, they are all too bitchy and annoying... but the End of Evangelion is great, mainly because it's all a nonsense.
