Well your friend must have bought the worst tv possible, or it's 8+ years old, back when burn in was an issue. I've had 8 hour + gaming sessions with the HUD in the same place on my plasma, and no burn in whatsoever.
and to OP: Your sales guy you talked to was clearly an idiot.. LED Plasma's do not exist. They were probably just trying to impress you to make a sale.
Plasmas don't burn images into the screens like they use to. Plasmas use a turneing pixel feature, it turns a group of pixels at a time to stop image burn, some older Plasmas even move the image on the screen very slightly so the human eye doesn't notice, but it's enough to not burn an image.
LED is the way to go, the TV's like Samsung use way less energy then Plasmas and LCD's, do to the low energy output of the LED's.
They also have an amazing picture, and don't have that 'Soap Opera' look to HD movies, shows, like LCD's do, the color in LED's is more true, in the ones I saw anyway.
Mind you tho, LED's will cost you $$$$$ but are said to last longer then any TV on the market (Next to DLP)
Plasmas have seen a huge decrease in $$$$$ over the last couple years.
DLP's are just great with energy and are the cheapest priced, the picture is just as good as well, but every 3-5 years you might have to change the bulp, very easy to do, and they cost $65-$200.

well, I heard the Panasonic Kuro-Panel plasmas have the best picture of all TVs, but they cost an arm and a leg, a kidney and possibly a testicle or two
I'm not sure if it's good to game on such things though..

Just thought I'd note that LED tv's are still LCD's, just with different backlighting. Might not be clear from your post.
For SD resolution viewing- its gotta be plasma.. and if u watch a lot of live action sports/movies
LCD I'd go with only bcoz of the brightness and lighter size..
LED.. if u have the money to burn sure, also consumes the least energy
Panasonic just launched 1" thick plasmas.. any1 seen those yet?

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:
a. a AAA 3D sonic title
b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"
c. redesgined PS controller
d. SEGA back in the console business
e. M$ out of the OS business
Okay listen here i had the same question when i wanted a nice TV. Plasma with have better colors, deeper blacks and a refresh rate that is still better than LCD mine is 280 hZ, where the new LCD have a 240HZ. I have never had a plasma burn in problem. THey make them now with something called pixel orbiter that makes burn in almost inpossible. Also for gaming, a plasma is the best the LCD lags behind games that are played on Plasma. CONS? It gets pretty hot, and uses a lot more energy but its worth it trust me plus you cant get dead pixels like in LCD

Ya, I should have said LED Powered.
Thats why I compared LEDs, Plasmas, and DLPs

Plasma beats the living daylights out of LCD in almost every area.
Go for the plasma.
