Forums - Sony - why did Sony do it.......

ps1 was the highest selling console of all time, until the ps2 came out and it became the highest selling console of all time. Sony made billions off of both those units respectively, had 1 hell of a market share, and was extremely profitable. So why do you think they, instead of investing all that profit into a cheap, cost efficent, hd upgrade of the ps2, which would insure continued dominance of the brand, along with massive profits right off the back, and instead go with a highly advanced, extremely pricey, console that has the potential to revolutionze gaming, and provide experiences never to be had in home console gaming, why did they invest all thier billions into a format that allows developers so much to work with, why invest in the cell processor that when utilized correctly can bolw the doors off of what we thought were possible on a home console, and also, why are they still supporting the platform after clearly losing so much money.

They probably tought that with so much marketshare, people would actually buy their overpriced console, and still be the first this generation.
They were wrong.

Brand loyalty can only can get you far... at least they learned there lesson this time around.

Odd. Future. Wolf. Gang. Kill. Em. All. OFWGKTA Don't give a fuck!

^this. they thought they can do whatever they want, but now there were some asses kicked.

And dont mind PSP Go, its just their experiment with digital distribution imo. (that is what the high price is for,                                                          to lose no money while trying things on gamers.)

and PS3 was not the first console i bought, after screwing europe (naaahh.. they can wait 'til march, and if thats not enough for them, we'll cut out some chips ) and Kaz' stupid 'we want people to do extra work to get their Console' i owned a wii.. after it the 360... and where am i now? damn you awesomestation -_-

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

I dont know. the PSP go was another Epic failure. I have one and it works alot better than the original but the problem is that

1) it is too expensive (I got a good deal on it though)
2) there are no UMDs. you have to download them. that means that all the games you buy have no re-sale or trade-in value (although thats not a problem for me becuase I download all my games for free)
3) not many people want to buy the same console twice when not much is improved.

the PS3 was also very flawed.

1) the blueray ability was a gimmick that not too many people cared about and it raised the cost of the console dramatically
2) the price itself was too big for most people to afford and the 360 was cheaper.
3) the expensive price caused sony to lose publishers to the 360
4) the loss of publishers and their franchises caused people to care less about the PS3
5) this endless snowballing effect maimed and hindered its attempts in the console race.

Now I love sony and I love my PS3 but even I waited a while before getting it. sony needs to get their act together.

"Enough expository banter! Now we fight like men! And ladies! And ladies who dress like men! For I am Gilgamesh...it is morphing time!"

Two reasons:

1- They were targeting the existing gaming audience, which is more graphics-oriented than the expanded audience the Wii captured.

2- They overestimated their brand power. That's pretty obvious from the declarations of their execs before launching the PS3 (things like "people will get another job to buy the PS3", "the generation starts when we say so", etc.).

blu-ray

thats why.

i dont think so, if ever they could have released a Wii with blu ray for cheap and sell millions.

sony said they decided to make a console like PS3 a long time ago,  ps3 it's a engineering dream, it goes against all profitable rules and economy standards.

blu ray isn't the cause, ps3 was over engineering it have multiple LAN, 2 Cells, but was hell of expensive to build, they removedd the cell and opted for a traditional gpu of nvidia because they were cheaper to produce even so it was still to expensive to make.

Basically they relied too much on brand recognition and blu-ray push, thinking that those two factors alone would be enough to encourage their previous fan base to jump directly from PS2 to PS3.

As history showed time and time again, no console maker can get away with that. It happened to Nintendo and now it has happened to Sony. If they learn from their mistakes, then it's all good for them, but if they insist on the same business deal on the next generation of consoles, then the same fate will await them, with the added agravation that their fan base has dimished from the PS2 to the PS3.

Not saying that the PS3 isn't a quality console, currently is my most liked console in this generation, even though I started out with a Wii, and my current PS3 isn't even mine, it's my dad's (i'm on the market to buy a Slim exclusively for me), it has the most quantity of games that I want to play.
But it's competitors have shown that this generation, quality can be found in all three consoles, thus creating a more fair and tighter competition, which us gamers can only benefit from

Current PC Build

and thus i'm still supporting it like a crazy fanboy which i am.
