Forums - Gaming - The meaninglessness of "HD Twin" term, predictions & prize for being right.

You're wrong.

The term is very descriptive as the 2 consoles are very alike and the only other console is WAY different.

You may hate the term all you like, but it makes sense.

If it wasn't for the Wii, who would be calling the two systems, "The HD Twins"?  I don't see anyone would be doing that.  If it were just the two, then there won't be such talk at all.  So adding the Wii suddenly makes them "twins"?

*shrugs* i for one have no problem to differentiate between those consoles, so I won't call them "twins"

The term helps to portray the industry as the publishers percieve it. Most publishers see the PS3 and 360 as one platform that they can develop for, especially with the advent of engines that have multiplatform support, they can develop one thing, and easily port it, as with Capcom's MT engine, whereas Wii has differentiated itself so significantly that it is impossible to develop what is literally the same exact thing for all three, so publishers, by and large, see the console sphere in this light.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

this kind of reminds me of when you tell real twins that they are the same person and they get mad because they are different lol

I am a nintendo fan, not a nintendo fanboy

I dont like the term either. Thats why I always say the HD Consoles and not HDtwins. The term HDtwins is used to differenciate the HD Consoles from the Wii. Thats why they are counted together in marketshare. The Wii opened a new way of gaming which is different the HD Consoles are the classic consoles they have just changed in terms off power and graphic (and online) So the HD Console marketshare shows how big the classical gaming market is and its still bigger then the new market the videogame market has split up in two pieces. They are completly different the audiences are different the HD Consoles share everything the gamers the games the functionality. The difference between the PS3 and the Xbox 360 is much smaller then the difference between the Wii. Thats why they are called HD Twins even though most its an insult for the PS3 in my eyes because it has clearly an advantage technically (Bluray default HD and better graphics atleast now).

Who has a vested interest in counting them together?  That I don't understand unless it is a fanboy who is embarrassed by the Wii selling as well as it has been.

That has nothing to do with some sort of Victory. You seem to dont understand what this is all about. That the HD Consoles are counted together is no thing to be proud of or to show that the HD Consoles "win". Its just a way to show how big the High Definition marked compared to the NON high definition marked is. To show how many people show interested in this technology. Because the HD Platforms have so many similarities thats another reason why 3rd party games are developed mainly on the HD Consoles you dont have to change your engine because they have similar specifications. So thats why the 3rd party developer focus on the HD Consoles because together they have a bigger marketshare then the leader. WHich is the first time in history like this. Because the leader had alaways 60% or more marketshare. Thats why the WII dont get the most 3rd party games even if its the leader. Some people claim that it is because the Industry hates the WII but in a buisness feeling like hate or love are irrelevant.

well, most people just have fun with predictions and sales. It's the one's that take it too seriously to almost unhealthy level I'll be worried about

Maybe if developers stopped thinking of the PS3 and 360 being "the same thing" the PS3 will stop getting shorted in multi-platform titles.  That mentality results in the PS3 getting the short end of the stick.  Development between the two system is akin to the Genesis vs the SNES, with the SNES taking the role of the PS3 in regards to being harder to develop for.  I do doubt that developers actually do view the PS3 and 360 as "twins" and the same to develop for though.

for the average consumer they are the same thing. They want to play MW2, rock band, madden, GTA etc. Games like gears or uncharted are easily replaced with another game on the other system, the average person will just play a similar game on the other system. Most people don't need to and don't have the time to play every good game that comes out.
