Forums - Gaming - Final Fantasy vs. Dragon Quest

I think DQ is a better game as a true JRPG heritage, but honestly I can't stand tru JRPG heritage games anymore. I have about 30 PnP RPG that scream in pain when every time I hit a random encounter in a dungeon. It's an awesome game for sure. I played DQ 1-4 and am planning to play DQ 5-9 some day real soon. Don't ask me why. Maybe it's a sick perversion I have to playing the game. Or maybe there is something in the grinding montonous apeal and difficulty.

But FF is an easier game with usualy more entertaining stories like FF4,6 and FF12. The only thing I would like more from FF is less meaningless combat. Something more akin Fall Out series in regards to rate of combat. Non random, but plenty of bandits, villians and stuff.

So because of my inherent preference for entertainment(FF) rather than gameplay(DQ) I will grudgingly give my vote to...

Final Fantasy

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Great post, and many valid arguments! Before opening this thread I surmised that this would be very one-sided.  I'm one of those weird minorities that digs the leveling grind (I know, who gets enjoyment out of that?!).  But maybe DQ IX will finally bridge the gap, at least I'm hoping we'll see a popularity rise from the American audience.

50/50 I love both of them but recently I give my vote to DQ.
I prefere RPGs with heroic fantasy style, so with the FF series who takes a futuristic way (FF 8, 10, 12, 13...), the FF series has fallen.

DQ1 DQ2 > FF2
DQ3 > FF3
DQ4 > FF4 (sorry, it's true)
DQ5 = FF5
DQ6 DQ7 > FF7 (again, totally true)
DQ8 > FF8

DQ wins so far for me.

I'll vote DQ because it makes me think of Dairy Queen.

Final Fantasy for me, easy. FF VII-XII have been some of my favorite games ever.

I've also noticed a substantial departure from the medieval to the progressive, futuristic, almost "steam punk" atmosphere in the FF series.

My favorite Final Fantasy, VI, was on the verge of that transition, but Dragon Quest has maintained that consistency throughout.

Current totals:
FF:  22

DQ: 7 (on a rise mo-f***ahs)
