Forums - Microsoft - Just found out my 360 was modded and has been banned!

^^
Those lazy modders created such half-assed mods!!!

If I lost the ability to go online my 360 would be all but useless. The main few things me and the wife use are: 1) Netflix 2)last.fm 3) Gaming 4) downloading demos...

So it would make very little since for us to go off and mod out console. And the only way I would even consider it would be if the hackers found some way to have their own form of live available to console owners. I know the original xbox had something like this and it wasn't to bad. But until that happens modding would be useless to me.

The main reason I would even think about modding an xbox would be for the ability to put my games collection on the hard drive and not need a disc. And also to install movies to the hard drive. If that were the case I would want to get the biggest hard drive possible.

Even with this said I would really doubt I would ever mod my 360. Even with my piss poor gaming score, I would hate to think I would lose it and all of my friends from the service. I have worked too long to have a decent enough pack of buddies on there that I play with daily. To think I would be have to find another group of older gamers that aren't cry babies would sadden me.

OT:

To bad your console got banned. Real quick question for you, how many real games do you own for it? Not torrented ones.

Most modders are heavy into hardcore games like Halo 3, CoD, Gears, etc. All the major online blockbuster games are huge pirate targets. That's why so many are detected because most modders are very much addicted to Live and gamerscore and whatnot. If modders didn't care about LIVE or multiplayer, then they wouldn't go online, they wouldn't be detected, and they wouldn't be pirating heavy online titles as much.

it probably won't affect most "pirates", because they already knew they shouldn't log into live, only the stupid ones did it knowingly and second hand buyers that had no idea their console was modded (although everyone should know these days, that most 2nd hand 360s are RROD'd or banned from LIVE)

second hand buyers get the stick from the industry, because from their point of view they are half-pirates

and making the console unusable is very critical .. I think that's damaging of peoples property and would be very very expensive for MS (they'd get sued millionfolds)

That does not make a lot of sense.

For microsft to know about a modded console it needs to have been connected to the net so those 500k or so users that were banned did indeed connect to live...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

And that is why I'll never ever buy a used console.

you bring up a good point, but the disadvantages of a banned console like that are too big not to ignore. And playing online is HUGE with most games these days.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

The really clever step for pirate modders would be to add to modded consoles full internet connectivity without going through Live.

Xlink says hi. It's not full internet connectivity, but it's pretty good.

Nice, it looks good and useful also for regular games owners with unmodded consoles.

So, I don't use my 360 much, and I turned it on for the first time since the ban fell on those with modded consoles. Turns out I've been banned from Live (or at least my console has). As the 360 was given to me I had no clue it had been modded! In fact, I assumed it hadn't been modded as the reason I was given the 360 was because it wouldn't play PAL games (at least that's what I was told).

To be honest it's not a huge loss as I only had Silver membership anyway and my gamer score was pretty low. If anything, Microsoft has just informed me I can play all games, regardless of region! And the 360 was free so as long as I still have my Live account to use on PC for Fallout 3 I can't really complain.

You are wrong. Modded (or to be more precise flashed) consoles cannot play games from all regions, only from region of origin. If you have for example PAL console, you can play PAL and region free games, but not NTSC (both US and Japan).

Well that's bloody annoying, guess I'm still going to have to import from playasia.com after all.

So long as the XBox 360 can still play games on it that is all that matters. So do not bother playing games that require game saves.

I thought an XBox Live ban would just stop you from playing online or using XBox Live on the banned XBox 360.

Maybe with a memory card or the integrated memory on the newer systems ?

You can save on HDD, even if you have banned console. But, when, or if, you buy new console, you cannot transfer such saves and profile. If I put it simply, whatewer is on banned console can be used only on this banned console.

As long as I can still save games on it then it's still a use to me. The most annoying thing for me will be not being able to download demos of 360 exclusives. I luckily have a PS3 for everything else.
