If they could make it so the PS3 could play PS2 games, then it should go.
However, the PS3 isn't powerful enough for that. Maybe the PS4 will be, and then they can drop the PS2.

Green Penguin said: I know that a lot of people like the PS2 but I think it needs to pack its things and get out of here. Why? Well, the PS2 is the best selling game console of all time with about(Estamated) 138 Million sold! That is insane but it still has to go. The PS2 came out in 2000 and it is now December 2009 and in 2010 will become 10 years old. The PS2 is still selling new at a price of about $100. The PS3 which came out in 2006 has had no luck in the past with reaching PS2 sales. With the new PS3 slim out and the recent price cut to $300 has gave the PS3 more hope. The PS3 stands at about 27 Million in last place of the gen and not even close to what PS2 was at during this time. In my opinion the PS2 hasn't helped and is only slowing the PS3 down. With the $100 PS2 still on the market why would many even want to get a PS3? Not only is the PS2 still around but it is also still geting games and is being well supported. With the recent numbers the PS3 has been getting I can't help but think has PS3 done all its can? With Black Friday numbers of 440K-550K I think the PS3 is ready to take on this gen and the older brother is just getting in the way. In my opinion with the PS2 out of the way the PS3 could pass the 360 way faster then anyone thinks it can. If you think about it Sony has been around for a while and won both gens in the past by far. Could those 138 Million people switch to the wii and 360? The answer is no. Many Sony fans(Probably over 20 Million) have yet to switch over to a PS3 or other console this gen. why? It is simple the PS2 is still being supported and people feel that they are still able to get new games so why bother. I think that Sony should discontinue the PS2 before summer 2010. Not only discontinue it but also not support it anymore.
What do you think? Should Sony ditch the PS2 in order to bring in new PS3 owners? |
If the PS3 doesn't play PS2 games, how exactly does the PS3 welcome PS2 owners the way the PS2 welcomed original Playstation owners? If the PS3 was backwards compatible with the PS2, the way my 60GB PS3 is, then Sony could stop production of the PS2. But, since they don't have it, they keep the PS2 on the market.
NicholasCage said: Not kidding, but I saw someone buy 7 PS2's at Best Buy last week. I was like wtf... it was all they had also. Also, there are some people out there in poverty wanting to buy a new console. They most likely haven't gotten a console and PS2 is the cheapest one they can afford, especially the games. And also, people would want a DVD player + game console if they haven't had it yet. |
7 PS2's being purchased are likely holiday gifts being given out. There are still people who don't even have a PS2. I know someone recently who just got one. So, shtere is still a market for one.
Impulsivity said: Here is a bet that I think I have the better odds on. The 360 will be discontinued and stop selling before the PS2. Thats right, the PS2 will have outlasted 2 generations of Xbox and sold more then both Xboxes combined by the time its done. 95% certainty. |
If Microsoft has the next XBox be fully compatible with the 360, then do expect that to happen. The 360 gets phased out and replaced by the Next XBox.
