Forums - Gaming - Could have MW2 sold so much without its $150m marketing campaign

wow $200 million, talk about your wastes of money, seriously, I mean many games generate more revenue for much less cost

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Err ?

And which games exactly generated 560 million$ of revenue on the first week ?

Heck, take the 560 million$ , remove the 200 million $, that's still 360million$ in a week and only 1 game has done more in a week...

I think the campaign was successfull.

You have to realize the goal was too to push the majority of the people to buy their copies early and not wait...

This minimize the revenue loss through people buying used copies or from selling copies at a lower price 6 months down the road...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Who cares if it sells that first week or over 100 weeks? Many Wii and DS games sell for years with huge tails and these are new copies by the way, and cost millions less to develop and advertise, while bringing in even more revenue

I think MW2 would have not sold so well had it not been for all the serious price cuts

You mean pre-order bonuses like Amazon gift cards? I would have agreed with that if I didn't work in retail. We sold 1k copies in a retail store in two days alone in the US. Thats insanely stupid and not even Halo 3 had that impact on my store (just several hundred copies for the week).

It's just that simple.

I m not sure it was clever to spend money on marketing

Just judging the pre-orders, I m sure the sales were already sufficient for Activision ...

(about the numbers, 40M dev + 110 marketing)

$150m is INSANE. I don't understand how they spent that much because the sheer amount of commercials, etc that would entail was unseen by my eyes.

I perfectly know that marketing is important, but if a company spends more on marketing than on development I start having serious doubts on the real value of what they sell me.
Even more in cases like this where features present in previous games of the series and taken for granted by all PC gamers were removed.
I'm quite happy I'm a very mild fan of FPS genre, as it looks like it's the favoured victim of marketing and greed excesses of publishers.

Once again, you're comparing the success of Nintendo games to everyone else.

Nintendo is probably the most successful software developer ever. You gotta stop comparing them to everyone else.

they didn't release that many commercial but they did put commercials during major events such as NBA final and all such big sporting and other events and advertising even for a few times during these mega events costs alot

Example:It cost's $2.5m for a single 30 secs ad during the superbowl in US
