Forums - Sales - US dollar falls to 14-year low against the yen

Sony and Nintendo watch out...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8380030.stm

The US dollar has hit a 14-year low against the Japanese yen with low interest rates in the US making the greenback less attractive to investors.

The dollar slipped to 86.5 yen, its lowest level since July 1995.

The US has indicated it is unconcerned about the dollar's slide, and will not intervene to strengthen it.

Many traders are swapping dollar holdings for gold as a safer investment in the current uncertain economic climate.

The price of gold is currently at a record high of $1,194.5 an ounce.

Close watch

"This yen strengthening is caused by dollar selling rather than yen buying, so this is not something Japan can handle itself," said Yutaka Miura at Mizuho Securities.

"This trend will continue unless the Japanese government takes action, in co-operation with the US."

In the short term at least, analysts said such intervention was unlikely.

Finance Minister Hirohisa Fujii said that he was keeping "close tabs" on the yen and would take "appropriate measures" if exchange rates "moved abnormally".

But his comments did little to ease worries among investors.

"He is finance minister, so of course he should be monitoring foreign exchange closely," said Tsuyoshi Segawa at Mizuho Securities.

The strengthening yen relative to the dollar caused Japanese shares to fall, with the main Nikkei 225 index dragged lower by major exporters, whose products become more expensive in the US as the yen strengthens.

The dollar has also fallen significantly against the pound and the euro this year.

It's ironic how people dwell upon a piece of paper.

Why exactly does Nintendo need to watch out? Aren't they like beyond profitable?

Yeah but this can reduce their profits substantially. I don't mean that it will get them into financial trouble, but it's definitely something to keep in mind when pricing products and planning future price cuts.

OK could you dumb the article down a bit? I don't exactly understand why the yen gaining strength hurts Japanese companies.

Yen gaining strength means other currencies are worth less yen. Japanese companies have a lot of their expenses in Yen, and they report fiscal results in Yen, so this hurts profitability.

Basically when you're an importer, it's good to have a strong currency. When you're an exporter, it's the opposite, you want a weak currency. Japan's currency has strengthened immensely in this recession.

Poor sony... going to be hard to hit those profit numbers. Poor japan in general actually. I've read that the yen being so strong against the dollar is somehow bad for Japan as a whole.... odly since you'd think most consumers import way more then export.

Nintendo of course isn't going to be looking great either but at least they'll be profiting.

Japan is an export economy, so a currency which is too strong hurts most of their businesses.
