Forums - Sony - Sony chooses IBM POWER 7 CPU for PlayStation 4

well yes I would expect about 1GB for graphics and the same for system high speed GDDR5 or by late 2012 possibly GDDR6 lol but that may be a bit expensive at launch

With Sony just patenting the Cell with the Emotion Engine, something here is fishy. Why patent your last gen technology (PS2 CPU) to throw it away next gen (PS4)? There's definitely a piece missing here, which is why I suggest we wait for an official confirmation from the higher-ups.

To tell the truth, Sony's patent is about about having blocks of recompiled code refrenced by your interpreted one (or at least that's hpw I got it) and could very well apply to emulating the EE on Power 7, or even emulating SPE code on Power 7 cores (8 cores with 4x SMT and all those floating point units should be able to cope with emulating the PS3 Cell, though I haven't found details on memory access yet)...

The example implementation for emulating EE on a Cell might well have been a placeholder while they were still working with IBM on their next architecture.

As the great moon of Sony moves across the heavens, the tides below on Earth shall move with great chance.

Snicker ROFLMA. 10 year plan before next release(go ahead spin this one), snicker, teh CELL, snicker. Though it's just rumour, it doesn't seem to change the stance of everybody. All together now, It's all about the games(PS2) All together now, Wii is DOOMZ because of teh CELL(PS3). All together now, Nintendo is DOOMZ because of the Power7(PS4).

Though with all seriousness how about backing a philosophical stance rather than company PR religion. Sony clearly stated that the Cell is the defacto cpu for the future. The Cell was the chip to appear in all devices(with limited SPU) like cell phones, TV, Toasters(ok joking on that one). It was a wave of Sony supporters that shoved the tech down others people throats. Now that Sony under rumour or alone, not even fact, that a superior CPU could be used in the PS4 there's once again a sudden shift in opinion. Instead of the power of the Cell architecture It's about easier and less chaotic to develop for. Something that Sony supporters and Sony themselves have gone out to ridicule of that of the 360. I'm not saying that all Sony supporters are like this, but there's is certainly a great shift. At the beginning "Sony could do no wrong" Now it's about "Sony has learned". Well why should have Sony learned anything when they could have done "No Wrong".

Anyways I will just continue to watch the tides shift again when REAL information is announced come 2010/2011 E3 from Sony PR department. Maybe we will really get 4d graphics next time :)

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Why the hell are there so many threads on the PS4? Somone should make a thread with links to all your threads so that we can all laugh when you're wrong.

Lately VGChartz has me feeling like I went through a time machine.

PS2 launched in 2000. The PS1 went on to be manufactured and supported until 2006: 12 years after it's Japan debut, and 11 years after it's US/EU debut.

PS3 launched in 2006. The PS2 is still supported to this day, over 3 years later, and over 9 years after the it launched.

With PS4, the PS3 can still, and most likely will, be supported throughout the first 3-4 years of the PS4's life. Of course that's mostly up to the consumer, and not just Sony. Unless the PS3 dies off quickly there after the PS4's launch, the 10-year-plan will be in effect though.

6 years per generation seems short. Even though its been like this since playstation 1.

Its fun to speculate and all, but this is still a rumor, POWER 7 CPU has some of the CELL in there (IBM is using some of its best development results in its latest CPU's architectures, so there is some CELL in there too), and all in all, I will wait for true specs in about a year time, or at leat some leak from devs working on it (PS4 games or even Sony ' I leak like a old boat' type of we dont comment on rumors).
