Forums - Sony - Sony chooses IBM POWER 7 CPU for PlayStation 4

^^yes but it is a very believable one, Sony dumps the Cell and goes for IBM, smart choice, this will be cheaper and less chaotic to develop for. I say PS4 will be $399, and $499

err the Cell is made by IBM

Oh that's cool. If IBM switches to, say, a 22nm production node until the PS4 launch, I think it is safe to assume that it would be reasonable to employ such a POWER7 processor clocked at 4GHz or so and utilizing all eight cores. The die size of such a processor remains to be seen, but IBM usually economizes transistors, so to speak.

They're learning! 2012 is the perfect time to release it too.

Yes in 2012 Sony should hit thier 10 year strategy....

Albion - Its Fun as Ballz !!!!!

Nah, it'll still only use 6 cores.
One core is always disabled because they get higher production rates, and one will be used for something else, like OS.

why is there so much Playstation 4 talk at the moment?

this is all rubbish will Sony says so

^It's always like this.
We'll be hearing about all companies new consoles soon.

Shit I knew about the ps3 having BR before the ps2 even came out.

i predict a launch tag of £199 and $249

Considering inflation adjusments, that would mean PS4 would be half as pricey as the PS1 or the NES... not only that, there would be no room for pricecuts or profits, unless the hardware were to be really really crappy. Very smart prediction right there... Mark my words - no next-gen console will release for less than $349, neither for more than $499.

$400 is a good starting price for a new system IMO

This is great news for PS4, terrible news for PS3

If the announcement is true every developer has just effectively been told "Sorry we made a right lash up in picking the Cell"

Where is the need to learn how the architecture works and investing years into game engine development for a chip thats about to be dumped for a generic easy to code for succesor.

May as well just say "Keep pumping out the shoddy Xbox ports coz the Cell is being put out to pasture"

For these reasons I doubt the announcent is accurate.

There's a 6 year gap between all their consoles so far, it hasn't stopped them having 10 year lifespans.
