Forums - General - So Oldboy might be my favorite movie of all time.

Just watched it for the 4th time, 2nd time in the last week and I literally never get tired of it. This movie literally smashes to pieces most movies people call emotional or over the top. Oldboy has, in one movie:

One of the best fight scenes I've ever seen.

One of the best twists in any film.

One of the best premises setting up a story.

And some of the best directing, acting and music in any movie.

Decided to buy the Blu Ray and DVD, gonna go around showing it to people who haven't seen it and encouraging them to buy it for themselves. Also I don't think Spielberg can do justice to the source material (even if it's the manga). I watched the other two movies in the vengeance trilogy and while they were alright (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) or good (Lady Vengeance) they are nowhere near the quality of Oldboy.

It's the kind of movie where you keep replaying the scenes in your mind after it's over and the music gets stuck in your head.

I replayed scenes over and over again in my head, in my nightmares! That is the single most fucked-up movie I have ever seen. It's not terrible, but I would never watch it again or suggest any person that I like or even not hate watch it.

whats it about?

I thought the "villain's" motivation, and his methods, and his final fate were a little too far fetched. It was good for shock value, but Oldboy isn't a movie that I see myself watching again and again (or possibly EVER again). Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours, though.

It's the story of a man that has been kidnapped for 15 years and then is released and lives a pretty fucked-up life, at the same time that he's trying to find out why he was kept.

I'd suggest to watch it if you like quirky and cult moves, if you're like me who prefers more mainstream, skip it because it's not the movie for you

hmm, im not much of a film buff tbh, most of the films I like are Sci-Fi or Action and more reccently Anime, so unless its in one of those genres, im unlikely to watch it.

Sounds interesting, I'll definitely look into it.  You've also reminded me about a thread I want to make.

Oh yeah, a week ago in the Oldboy recommendation threat I mentioned the flaws of the villain's motivation and actions, but there is no such thing as a perfect movie or a perfect anything for that matter.

And even though there are movies which might be better made or constructed and better stories and better acting, but the combination of the main actor's talent and the presentation and the purely unforgiving and unconventional and even illogical things and the director all combine to make this movie better in my opinion than about 10 movies I've seen that are superior if you only  count the sum of their parts, but Oldboy as a whole is the better movie as an experience. It might not be the best movie in my opinion but it might, it's hard to compare some movies.

I watched the movie year ago, I have mixed feelings about it.
It's hard to be disappointed by it tho , it's at least "good" :)
I also heard that the American version of the movie is being produced, is that true?

I saw it and though its great, action scenes, story and music. In the end I was like OMFG this movie is fucked up but its awesome.

I dont recommend it though if you like crap like twilight, comedies, zombie movies or things like transformers, or these are your favorite type of movies.

If you have good ear you will notice how good the music is too.
