GPUs are good for graphics applications, the Cell processor is merely ok.

if you consider 36+ billion shader/operation's per-sec as just merely ok !

wow. you do know the xbox360 main GPU only does 48 billion shader opp's/sec without optimizing the code for  it's unified design.

Shader ops were never the problem. Think about the fixed function parts of the rendering pipeline...

if you will think about the IO controller bandwidth!

lol....

were splitting hair's here..bytw where is the bunny?

ps:

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner.  I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.

It keeps going and going and goi... well it could be anywhere by now.

I was talking about texure and raster ops btw.

Last I checked Sony is a "hardware" company and all this means is that Sony has the prototype and the finished product.  They can farm out the fabrication to any firm willing to manufacture the Cell; dead in the water seems like a miss leading thread title to me.  Plus they have the technology so they (Sony) can make improvements on it with the help of contracted IBM engineers.  I believe the thread is meant purely for flaimbait (or vgdollars)......nothing more to see, everyone move along.

VG dollars are next to useless and why would I flamebait when I also posted an article saying Sony would use a variant of the Cell processor.

There has been an update too the op (I had my doubts.)

Update: It appears that the sourced article at Fudzilla isn’t quite the full story. Reading further into this, the original German story at Heise actually states that it’s only the planned successor to the current PowerXCell-8i processor, slated to have two PowerPC processors and 32 SPEs, that will not be released. There’s no specific mention that IBM are halting the development of other Cell processors in the report, and thus there’s every chance that the PS4 could still use some variant of the Cell. Hope this clears up this story somewhat.

so will there be a cell 2?

Yes or No. Please a short answer. I read different sources saying different things.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

I would say according to this recent update Yes there will be another Cell.

Isn't the Cell scaleable?

I have never understood why Sony loves to do exotic architecture on their CPU's. The smart thing for them to do with the PS4 would be to drop the cell and make their next cpu a developers dream to program for. Yes it would all but kill BC but that doesn't matter a lot to me. Can you imagine what some of Sony's 1st party studios could do with an easier to develop for and more powerfull CPU/GPU? I am certain it would be astonishing.

To hell with the cell........ :P

I wouldn't be surprised if the ps4 is only a small jump in terms of processing power over the ps3. I expect Sony to take a more GC to Wii style upgrade and focus more on changing how people interact with the game or some other form of point of difference.

If Sony is a loss leader with their hardware next gen then they're idiots. I think the most important lesson of this gen is that hardware should be sold at a profit from as early as possible.

you make no sense. easier to dev for doesn't mean you will get better games, if a dev studio needs hand holding, then they shouldn't have came into the gaming industry and should just perish like the rest of the 3rd rates.
