Forums - General - Five Foreign Movies Every American Should See

City of God (Brazil, 2002) Directed by Fernando Mirelles and Katia Lund

One of the best movies I've seen, goes from funny to shocking to a love story and everywhere else. The City of God are the slums of Rio, this film follows the life of a few of the notable street kids from childhood to adulthood. The two main characters take completely different paths, one becomes a major gangster and the other a phto journalist.

Trainspotting (UK, 1996) Directed by Danny Boyle

Similar in some ways to the American movie Requiem for a Dream if you've seen that, it follows the lives of a bunch of youth in Scotland, but mainly focuses on Renton who's trying to quit heroin and coming to the relization that the company he keeps might be the biggest danger in his life.

Pan's Labyrinth (Mexico, 2006) Directed by Guillermo Del Toro

One of the most imaginative and original movies you will see. It brings fairy tale and fantasy to life better than anything I've seen and the imagery is creative not derivative. A little girl is living through the Spanish civil war and she escapes to a strange fantasy world to get away from the harsh realities of her life.

Audition (Japan, 1999) Directed by Takashi Miike

A very disturbing movie that plays on old stereotypes and cliches to lure you in. It starts off very slow, intentionally, setting you up for the most uncomfortable final 20 minutes you might see on film.

Irreversible (France/italy 2002) Directed by Gaspar Noe

A movie that's completely presented in backwards order. You'll see how a young couple's perfect romance is smashed into pieces by unforseen events.

Five of my favorite movies, they can go head to head with any of the best movies made by Hollywood.

Im in the UK and have seen all bar one of them....

you should add sexy beast to that list.... genius movie.

Which one haven't you seen? I haven't seen Sexy Beast but I've wanted to. I'll check it out some time soon. I could have added about 20 more foreign movies but I wanted to give 5 of the best I've seen and try to get a lot of different countries' movies represented.

Might make another list later :)

If you think Audition is one of the most uncomfortable movies to watch, maybe you haven't seen Hard Candy. Ridiculously painful to watch.

On a side note, I found Battle Royale and Run Lola Run more enjoyable than the two movies I've seen on this list (Audition and Pan's Labyrinth). But then again I have weird taste in movies.

I recommended Hard Candy recently in another thread, but I think Audition was harder to watch. Hard Candy's worst part is not that long while Audition is about 20 minutes long.

I've seen Battle Royale and Run Lola Run, both are good movies too, especially the Japanese one. Lola I saw a long time ago so I can't remember it too well might check it out again soon.

Seen the first 3.

For a non Eurocentric movie i'd suggest Kagemusha.

Though i believe they got some money from Fox.

Keep the movie recommendations coming, trying to see as many of the good foreign films I've missed out on.

I actually thought The Orphanage was a better movie than Pan's Labyrinth, but I do like all of Guillermo del Toro's spanish work ... His english work is kind-of spotty though, entertaining movies but it is clear that Hollywood doesn't know what to do with him.

Geez, between the amount of movies you've seen and your post count how do you ever find time for gaming?

But yeah, If that scene in Hard Candy had gone much longer I don't think I'd be here posting on VGChartz but rather talking through my emotional distress with a psychologist. I think part of the reason Audition didn't hit me as hard was I wasn't as connected to the guy in Audition. I don't really know why, maybe because the beginning was so slow that I found him boring maybe?

I usually sleep short hours so I'm awake times of the day that most people are sleeping and I usually spend my time on my own between movies and games (Games taking a back seat now). Probably not good for my health but I've seen way too many movies that way lol

I thought that because the beginning was boring the last part was even worse cause it was such a change, but I really like the movie Hard Candy too. Another disturbing movie is the movie Kids, but for completely different reasons not violence.

@ Happy: Never seen the Orphanage, but yeah the Hellboy movies were very average at best. They did have some interesting creature designs though,

The concept for Irreversible is pretty cool. I need to check it out. And here I was expecting 5 porn flicks. Instead, there were only three!
