City of God (Brazil, 2002) Directed by Fernando Mirelles and Katia Lund
One of the best movies I've seen, goes from funny to shocking to a love story and everywhere else. The City of God are the slums of Rio, this film follows the life of a few of the notable street kids from childhood to adulthood. The two main characters take completely different paths, one becomes a major gangster and the other a phto journalist.
Trainspotting (UK, 1996) Directed by Danny Boyle
Similar in some ways to the American movie Requiem for a Dream if you've seen that, it follows the lives of a bunch of youth in Scotland, but mainly focuses on Renton who's trying to quit heroin and coming to the relization that the company he keeps might be the biggest danger in his life.
Pan's Labyrinth (Mexico, 2006) Directed by Guillermo Del Toro
One of the most imaginative and original movies you will see. It brings fairy tale and fantasy to life better than anything I've seen and the imagery is creative not derivative. A little girl is living through the Spanish civil war and she escapes to a strange fantasy world to get away from the harsh realities of her life.

Audition (Japan, 1999) Directed by Takashi Miike
A very disturbing movie that plays on old stereotypes and cliches to lure you in. It starts off very slow, intentionally, setting you up for the most uncomfortable final 20 minutes you might see on film.

Irreversible (France/italy 2002) Directed by Gaspar Noe
A movie that's completely presented in backwards order. You'll see how a young couple's perfect romance is smashed into pieces by unforseen events.
Five of my favorite movies, they can go head to head with any of the best movies made by Hollywood.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!
