I still think Sony may forgo the next battle and just stick with the PS3 till 2016. I mean the hardware is way ahead of its time and the 720/WiiHD can't possibly out do it by too much. Why waste all that money on R&D and launching a new system when the existing one has nearly the same graphical fire power as well as an established user base?

Not really.

GPU is extremely dated, and the console is severely lacking in memory - it shows today, and it'll show like hell in the years to come.

devs get around the whole memory issuing by ofloading alot of the work through the spu's, does not anyone do their research here, and if it is severely lacking in memory please explain why ps3 has been producing better games since uncharted 1 was released, and the xbox has still not outdone that never mind uncharted 2, killzone 2, and next to come is god of war 3.

Uhh?

Better-looking games come out as time progresses because developers get a better grip on the platform, that's just how life works.  That's especially true for the PS3, given that it's so different arcitechturally from anything else.

However, a PC with a 70$ dual-core CPU and a 100-130$ GPU outdoes the PS3 by a lot in 2009 - and we're still many years away from the launches of the aforementioned consoles.  High-end video cards today can run games well over 1080p at 60 fps with more impressive visuals than present console games, which are typically 30 fps at 720p.

And this gap will only increase with time, as technology moves at a blistering pace.

So, what makes you think the PS3's technology will be relevant till 2016?

If Sony does try to sit out the next gen, that means they are in dire financial straits and are essentially dead, as they will see little or no support from third party devs

go troll elsewhere do you have any facts to back up any of your statements??

their plan is for 10 years of support for ps3, it is too early for the next console, maybe in 2 years time they will start planning the ps4, by which time they should be making profit again.

personally i love their 10 year plan as i can't afford to upgrade less than every 5 years lol.

You actually bought into the PR BS, lol, if they did try to hold off for 10 years, they would be dead in the gaming market, first off who would buy the console?  Once the 720 and whatever Nintendo's next console will be, were to come out in 2012-2014, people would flock to those consoles, leaving the PS3 behind, not to mention, very few if any third parties would support the PS3, as the PS3 has a smaller base than the 360 or Wii and only gets as much support as it does because of the 360.  Sorry Sony is planning to release their next console between 2011 and 2013 right around the time the 20 is released, and the Next Nintendo console will also release around that time.

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

actually it's not PR BS, they have done it for the past two generations and have kept their promise, why would they not this time?

@jefforange no i dont espect it to last until 2016, that would be silly, but it still has lots of potential left in it thats for sure, and it's not like you don't have to constantly have to update you pc every couple of years if you really want to keep up to date, which i just find a total waste of money, i only upgrade when my pc finally breaks lol.

at least with the ps3 i don't have to worry about upgrading for a long time.

^Look at the charts, notice where PS1 and 2 were, now look at where 3 is, lol

The market not companies decide how long a product is viable, Wii is the only console with the potential to last 10 years

^^ I know PS3 may never catch the wii, lol, i was not debating that, it is inevitable for it to overtake the xbox 360 eventually lol.
There are still loads of ps2 users who have not decided what will be their next console yet, and I think that will be a very important decider to how things turn out in the end.

Anyway you still have not answered my question

^I did answer your question Sony can claim the PS3 for ten years all it wants, it won't sell that long people won't support a third place console for that long, inevitable to pass the 360, sorry no, its possible but not likely.

As for any people remaining to buy from the last gen, those are likely people waiting for lower prices, as they are those who bought at the tail end of the last gen, and those consumers will likely got the 360 or Wii, not the PS3, as the PS3 will be more expensive than the 360 (since MS will price cut next year and Sony will be hesitant to do so due to the losses on the PS3) and won't have the games of the Wii.

I don't mean to be a flametard, but given Sony's finance issues with the PS3, I wouldn't be surprised if they take a more layed back approach next gen. Sorta like Nintendo did this gen, but not as extreme.

8th gen predictions. (made early 2014)
PS4: 60-65m
WiiU: 30-35m
X1: 30-35m
3DS: 80-85m
PSV: 15-20m

Sony doesn't have the ability to do so, they can't disrupt like Ninty can, and they don't have the stable of monster software sellers, if they try to fight with Nintendo for the downstream they'll get crushed even worse than this gen.

You really are blind if you think all the people will choose a xbox 360 over the ps3, again if that is this case then why has all of the efforts for the xbox 360 not succeded?? ps3 is still selling more, and we still have the onslaught of ff and gt5 to come that will really make things interesting.

the price difference between the xbox(not the arcade version which is not worth buying IMO) and the PS3 is not much now, and anyone can see PS3 is the best deal right now, how many more price cuts can m$ afford, i am betting not many more, plus it will really make them look really bad if they keep on making price cuts, they already have done too many this year.

@novasonic you are making a good point there, i can see the same as well, they will use current tech in the next ps console, just like ninty did with the wii

^ROFL, the reason PS3 is selling more, is because right now PS3 brought its price in line with the 360, before the 360 had price advantage, now it doesn't. So at the moment the PS3 is leading, but its price equality with 360 won't last, Sony already hinted at no price drops next year, MS on the other Hand will price drop the recent specials were trial balloons to see how well price cuts will boost sales, and they worked very well. MS will drop and pick up a lot of the value consumers who owned a PS2 last gen.

As we saw, even cutting the price of the arcade was enough to really boost 360 sales, and that was in only one territory and at only a few retailers, doing a permanent cut on boththe elite and arcade WW, will really ignite 360 sales, by giving the 360 back its price advantage, and moving it more into a mass market price.
