Forums - Sony - How much does it cost Sony to keep PSN free?

PSN,Sony's online gaming community has been free from its launch back in 2006.Thing I'm concerned about is how much does it cost Sony to keep PSN going the way it is now,FREE.

Server and bandwidth are costly and to not get any sort of funding from ads or subscription must be difficult.Apart from this many people on PSN re-download the things they purchased again and again which again costs Sony.

With the losses they are enduring on the sales of PS3 hardware, the PSN cost is adding to it.

If you have any figure in mind, just share it here

Sony charges the publishers, I think its $0.1 per gig downloaded?? I'm more concerned about what happens when PSN userbase grows so big that publishers can no longer afford to publish on PSN, especially free stuff like demos.

That's revenue, not profit.

At the moment I believe it's covered by other means. Also, in US there has been Quore and chargeable content for a while now. Clearly we're going to see more of this going forward.

Therefore I don't see them have an issue keeping the core elements of PSN free - what I'm curious about is, when the dust settles, what will free PSN offer, what may require a sub and what will be based on single transactions based on preference?

Either way, I reckon online play, etc. will remain free for the foreseeable future - it's too good a difference to Live for Sony to change, particularly as Live has the lead right now.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Heres the thing,With XBL you pay $50 every year, with the SLIM you pay the extra $100 up front for online.

Maybe from the gamer perspective, but not from Sony's as the PS3 is surely more expensive to build than the 360.

Surely Blu Ray doesnt cost that much more to build.
