Metroid: The Other M may be hogging all the series’ face time right now, but Prime isn’t ready for the retirement home just yet. Speaking with ONM, Nintendo’s Kensuke Tanabe indicated that Metroid Prime’s next foray might be a return trip to the Nintendo DS.

“We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series. Depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on DS or DSi,” he said.

Well gee, that’s a funny way of saying “new 2D Metroid on the DS.” That is what he meant, right?

If its not 2-D it fails. I play the DS for 2-D games. Though I still need to get the metroid prime triolgy!

How would that mean new 2D Metroid (though that's what I'd really, really want).
If it's a Prime Metroid, I'd assume it would be Hunters 2 or something similarly disappointing.

Hunter 2 would be interesting.

If it were to be Hunters 2, they better make it's single player experience Metroid. Hunters wasn't a bad game, just not much of a Metroid game.

I thought they said Prime 3 would be the last Prime game....

Also, not to say the Prime series was bad, but frankly I want a new 2D Metroid BAD. Its long overdue and I think Nintendo and Yoshio Sakamoto should try to focus on marketing and releasing more entries in the series on a regular, 3-5 year basis, much like the main Zelda and Mario games.

With that said, Metroid Other M is pretty much my most anticipated game right now, along with DQIX and X. But I can't help holding out hope that after Other M we will see an actual sequel to Metroid Fusion in 2D on the DS or its successor. As much as I enjoy Metroids leap into 3D and I think Other M will even surpass the Prime series, I feel its true place lies in the realm of 2D.

I hope so as the DS line-up from Ninty is rather thin from next year onwards. Not a whole lot of 3rd party stuff that's exciting me either.
