Ok, my question is this: WTF happened in the game?  I am trying to understand a few things:

1. What happened with Sheppherd?  He ends up a traitor? See my next item.  And pardon myself if I got the name wrong.

2. Only thing in retrospect I can guess is this: After the nuke was launched over Washington, DC, ending up as an EMP pulse, it was killed a bunch of Americans, and stopped the Russians cold, plus also was meant to generate sympathy for the United States.  It was a triggered tit-for-tat, meant to cause the war to end.  However, Sheppherd got annoyed by this and felt it was necessary to end up turning it into a cause of war.  He knows what happened, and ends up kiling off individuals involved, as to not let the word get out.

3. How exactly did the terrorist attack by Makarov (pardon the name if it is mispelled), exactly cause the chain of events to unfold.  Just because you have one rogue American in it, means that America was responsible?  It looked like plot writing by someone who creates videogames, not an actual writer.

Can someone explain what happened and the above points?  Thanks.

This is all speculation answers by the way:

1) Shepperd becomes power hungry and betrays the alliance with the british to further his own goals. He wants to create a world of fear to allow for him to increase his military power. He was given "a blank check" to use what ever means necessary to take out makarov, so that's the first step in his descent into madness (too much power on his hands). He even says at the end that sign ups for the army have dwindled in recent times and by allowing makarov to do what he's done, it'll strike fear and a patriotism amongst the citizens and therefore he can easily influence them. That's why Shepperd took out Ghost and Roach, because they were about to get intel about the location of makarov, who is the symbol that Shepperd planned to use to inspire Americans to fight.

2) I can't really explain this one because I'm not sure what the question was asking.

3) The idea with the terrorist attack isn't that it was by Makarov, the whole point was they were pretending that it was Americans who did the terrorist attack. That's why when you're still in the elevator, he says "no russian", so that there's not a chance that people could think it was Russians that did it. With a dead American amongst the terrorists, I think the idea is that it was to trick people into thinking it was an American attack and that the airport security/russian police managed to "take one down". (So they used the dead body as a representative of the terrorist group, if it was a dead american terrorist, then the group must have been an american terrorist group, right?)

One thing that I didn't quite understand is the Captain price submarine bit. I thought he was meant to prevent the launch of the missile, but at the end of the mission, the dialogue seems to indicate that he wanted it to happen..

1- I agree. By letting the Russians get the ACS module and giving the American soldier to Makarov to betray to spark the Russian invasion, he plans on using these events to essentially get support for his forces so he can do whatever he wants. As Price says "if he wins, he'll be able to write history as he see's fit".

2- I'd say the events were all part of Shepard's plan and had been planning on this since the nuke that was detonated in the first Modern Warfare which killed 50,000 soldiers under his command. Price going rogue and turning the missle into an EMP wasn't what Shepard wanted. Regardless, he would have still gotten what he wanted with the support from America (Secretary of Defense said, "You warned us, we should have listened") and the the world  (the soldiers now want to attack Russia and burn down Moscow, Shepard said "There will be no shortage of patriots")

3- Exactly, makarov knew about the American in his ranks the entire time. Like I said above, I believe Shepard had let the Russians get the ACS module and then gave the American soldier, who he hand picked himself, to Makarov so he would be betrayed and used to spark a Russian invasion.

@ point 3. Yup, I also believe he did let them get the module. That's why the Russians could "disable" any satellite coverage and attack the States without being noticed.

What I want to know is what is the VIP (Raptor) supposed to contribute to the story? You had to rescue him two times or something... I completely missed that part.

I forget, did they say you had to rescue Raptor in the loading cut-scene for that level? I was confused as to who Raptor was. If I recall, he's dressed in a suit and had a briefcase (chained to his wrist? I don't remember).

The panic room part was stupid in that they didn't give any explanation after you got there. "Oh, he's already dead, but this looks fishy. Sweep this area for intel." Then boom, the next level you're in the thick of the conflict in the middle of Washington DC without a word on what happened. I guess it's just up the road on I 95 so whatever? :P

MW2s single player is the hardest video game story to follow I've ever played. It is very confusing and not engaging at all. I basically just did what the game told me and gave up on the story because it was so hard to follow what was going on. One of my biggest problems with it is the fact I couldn't ever tell you why I was doing the stuff I was doing because the whole thing made no sense.

I would say, arguably the hardest without a game having much of a backstory.  The Metal Gear story is so backstory loaded that it ends up being brutally hard to follow, unless you are a fan.  MGS4 was all over the map, unless you were a fan of the series.

The difference between MW and Metal Gear is that the story still makes sense between each games... Guess which series?

Do we know why Sheppherd decided to kill Roach(?) and went after Price? How does Price, etc... mess up Shepperd's plans?

I think it's because they know the whole backstory with Makarov, and the cia operative in russia and for some reason Shepperd doesn't want that to get out. It could also be that he wants to be the eventual military leader of the US/World, and wants to do away with covert operations like the ones that Task Group 141 deals with and instead of upfront wars again so he can get lots of recruits.

This isn't really a spoiler, but did anyone else hate Soaps hair?  Not a game breaker, but everytime I followed him I tried to shoot that patch of hair off. I pictured him being so much cooler.

I really thought Soap was a black guy! When you finish Modern Warfare 1, you see a photo of your gang and there was a black man in there. I guess it was just Griggs or whatever his name!

LOL. I know a lot of brothers, and can tell you with a lot of certainty that McTavish is not a brother's last name.

OT: I loved his haircut. He should have his on game, actually. While I did like Ghost, Soap is still around, as well as Price, who's old as dirt now.
