Does 1 million more or less really matter in this case? ;)

depends - does 50 million dollars sound like it really matters to anyone?

They make shitloads of profit out of it anyways. And it's not safe to say, that everyone who pirated it would have bought it if they didn't have the possibility.

Maybe my opinion is a little unpopular on that topic, but I really don't feel bad for that stuff - not for so big companies and games. I just think it sucks if you download smaller (independent) companies' games, or don't pay for any games at all.

you place of employment approaches you and says, "you have been doing some excellent work we would like like to give you a raise."  obviously your responce will have to be, "No thank you.  I already make enough money to pay the bills."

besides, for every massively successful game that is released there are probably 10 financial failures.  The massive profit of one game is what allows a company like this to experient with new IPs and less popular niche titles without the thread of bankrupcy.  then again, how many game companies have already gone belly up this year.

I don't say it's correct to pirate games, I'm just saying that - in this case - it is a bit of an overreaction to make such a big fuzz about it. We're talking about Infinity Ward/Activision's Modern Warfare 2, which will probably one of the best selling games ever If they would be in a more troublesome situation, and, as already told, if they were a smaller, maybe independent company it'd be something different... though I'm thoroughly aware that most pirates lack that kind of thinking. But then again, one download more doesn't equal one lost sale. Many just wouldn't buy the game if they couldn't get it for free. Of course you can still call that immoral, but under these circumstances, it doesn't cause much harm at least.

yeah, i get your point but i really really hate piracy.

i have a friend who's a pirate and i aruge with him about it quite a bit actually.  i know a download isn't 1:1 to a sale but i can tell you this as a fact.  My friend has:

ps2: ball park of 300 - 350 pirated games: 0 purchased games

wii: ball park of 50 pirated games: 1 purchased game (SMG)

psp: ball park of 50 pirated games: 0 purchased games

ps3: 0 pirated games: 2 psn games and something like 8-10 disc games purchased.

...remove the ablility to pirate and he starts paying for games.

... and that kind of attitude sucks, no doubt about it. I don't question that, and I know that this is unfortunately quite widespread too, but as pointed out before, I felt like you also should put this discussion in a bigger context... you'll always have the "bad boys", but piracy as a whole isn't just the fault of the gamers and bad per se, but also the fault of publishers, developers and so on, and not always (necessarily) as dramatic for the succes/profit of the game, the devs, the industry and so on. My 2 cents :)

No wonder why devs are moving away from PC gaming, even Shio cant defend this.

what's the point of pirating MW2? The games real selling point is the online multiplayer, and you can't do that with pirated copies.

MW2 - Online Multiplayer = useless

@Bmaker11

I agree, the SP is meh at best.

I tend to disagree.

one of the argument pirates give is that they think the game is not worth the price asked.

Yet format that have cheaper game prices ( like the PC vs consoles) tend to be more pirated....

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

PCs are also easier to pirate though... consoles have to be modded first (if possible at all), on the PC you can just more or less download and play the games. If a console is easy to crack, it's also heavily pirated (PS1, Dreamcast, PSP, ...).
