Everyone who says "flop" here either:

1. Isn't satisfied with the game, ignoring sales.

2. When internet hype fails to sell gangbuster units.

3. Likes to be negative towards _______ competitive console.

These three reasons are the main things that I see, it makes having a civil and intelligent discussion about game sales nigh impossible.

Forgot about that one too.

That sums it up quite nicely

To me if it doesnt make a profit, the most hated game can sell 2 copies, but if they make a profit then its a success to me.

In my opinion, a game 'flops' if it doesn´t meet sales/profit target its developers/publisher expected....on the other hand, sometimes these expectations are not in line with reason...Dead Space Extraction, for example...if EA really thought this game would do great on a system already filled with on-rails shooters, and when a lot of people clearly wanted something different..then it´s like I said...not a reasonable expectation.

It's all related to how the company does based on the game. If a game could at least regain its dev costs, its mediocre. If it lost money on the deal, its a flop.

Generally, for a Wii game, we're talking about 8-10 mil for a AAA game, so they'll need to hit about 300-350k sales to make it worthwhile.

For a HD game, we're talking about double the number, at minimum. So, at least 600k to make back their investment.

A flop, as seen by a developer, is when they take a loss on the game. Regardless of what people say on these forums, to a dev, its a business, and if they lose money, its bad for business.

So let's reiterate - strictly from a profit/loss perspective, which is the ONLY thing the companies care about -

bardicverse - I couldn't disagree more. If Cod6 sold 2 million across the 3 platforms, it would make a profit, but still be a flop

You need to understand that VGChartz users talk in extremes. What the market thinks and what our forum posters think are two different things. I think in this day and age, 750k + warrants a sequel.

White Knight Chronicles sold only 360k and hasn't even been released in the west yet, however a sequel has already been announced. Either From Software and Sony are crazy or this game must have cost them next to nothing to develop.

While perspective differentiation is accepted, what purpose does it serve? If everyone things GTA3 is an awesome game, and you think it sucks, what bearing does your thought have on the world?

The market doesn't care about what individual people think, so if the developers and publishers warrant the game as a success, that's the only voice they hear. So, if COD6 only sold 2 mil units and made a profit, you thinking that it flopped changes nothing.

I'm not signaling you out directly, but why do people on forums think that their views are bigger than the general view the industry holds? Even my own thoughts on things don't affect or change the industry's view, and I'm a person engaged within the industry.
