The thread title says it all really. What do you think? How much will each system benefit from the huge first week of Modern Warfare 2?
If 360 can't outsell PS3 this week I think we can safely call the holiday order as Wii>PS3>360. If 360 gets up against the PS3 this week then it's going to be a tough battle for 2nd and 3rd.
These are some things to consider for 8-14 Nov (not only MW2 related):
- While MW2 on both systems outsold expectations, I think PS3 exceeded expectatations moreso than 360.
- In both system's cases the VAST majority of MW2 sales is to existing console owners.
- 360 MW2 bundle would have held back some sales in previous weeks and will bring forward the purchase for some people who may have otherwise waited until later in Nov or early December to buy. It could influence people who were leaning towards PS3, but I think it will mostly go to committed 360 buyers.
- 360 had a huge Walmart bounce. I'm a bit confused about how long the Walmart deal is running, but by the sounds of it a decent number of stores ran it for at least some of the 8-14 Nov week. Price beats games as system sellers at this point in the console cycle, so the Walmart effect could end up negating the MW2 bounce for 360 if the deal really did only go for 1 day in most stores.
- Target $50 gift cards on 360 Elites for Black Friday. Not as huge as Walmart but still will influence some buying decisions.
Personally I can't see PS3 benefitting by more than 10% from MW2. But there are so many factors for 360 I can't settle on a number, could be +20% over 1-7 Nov or could be -5% (US drop from Walmart high).
What do you think?
