Forums - Microsoft - Does MS deserve any respect ?

I know we love to split hairs and hold companies feet to the fire on things they've done wrong, but you can't just say MS is terrible without looking at what they have done right. Would the PSN be where it is if XBOX Live wasn't there first?
==> you want online, you can play it on PC IMO ...
Would Sony have released that delicious PS3 Slim redisign (it's pretty) without pressure from the 360 selling so well?
==> who cares ... people complained a lot about the design too
Would Nintendo have come up with the Wii if their only competition was the PS3?
==> sure, they basically didnt care about anyone. Ninty was doing their job on their side as always, perhaps noting the success of some party games on PS2
(We can discuss whether the Wii is a good thing or not some other time, I think that it has opened the minds of the industry and will push things forward, even though I don't care for a lot of Wii software right now). Simply by coming into the market, basically replacing Sega as a hardware manufacturer, MS has helped to move the gaming industry forward. For that they deserve some respect. Evil or not (and they are evil), it should be hard to not respect anything about them.
That I agree, just the fact that they are here add more competition to the business but, personnaly, I dont care about Halo AND all the potential flagships GoW1/2/MW2/ME/Fable/Bioshock could have been released without MS on the market ...

answer in the post

even if I must say, the thread is not really about console history, but mostly about OS history.

The one argument here that really gets my goat is "I don't care about Halo" as if that will somehow render Halo irrelevant. 10 million other people disagree. It is relevant.

I would like to say that I am sorry for derailing the thread, it is about OS after all. In that regards, Windows 7 is straight up awesome! It really is, and if it steals from Apple, well, good job Apple!

XD, a complete ripoff??? WTF mate, if that were the case, then Apple would be guilty of stealing ideas from Windows XP.

oh, because Apple has stolen ideas from Xp ?

Hmm, try reading my statement again...meh, screw it, I have a few seconds to educate you.

You said "is it inspiration or a complete ripoff" my reply was just to point out how ridiculous yours was. See, if Windows 7 was a complete ripoff from OSX, well then OSX must be ripping off quite a few features from windows XP. I'm surprised you didn't catch that, it really was simple.

I didnt know this, can tell me what plz (real question), thx.

OK let's not be as rude as you,
I see your point now
but I think you missed mine
When I said "complete rip-off" it is not "completely rip-off Mac OS X", but "completely rip-off some features of Mac OS X"
and then my question was (always about those features) :
are those features inspired by Mac OS X features ?
or are they directly ripped off from Mac OS X

I m now wondering if you read my OP ...

Dude, quite triple posting, it's bad form. Use the "edit button"

you are right, and it is not the first time, I should take care

BTW, your entire reply to commonman...utter BS, but I think you know that already

poor claim, no need to answer
next time remember to put IMO at the end ...

@CommonMan

console side opened

well, about Halo, it was just my opinion
and you are right. Also, I forgot about the very good Turn10 that made Forza3

so, on the console side, MS has not only bought the exclusivity of "confirmed company/project" ....

console side closed

They both sure are pretty...

Yet I haven't noticed Windows 7 being any faster than Vista (off topic, I know). Disappointed by that.

Depends what your system is like surely.

I have 4GB RAM... Vista would work fine on it... at full optimisation on it's own it was using about 1.4GB (if I had a 2GB system it wouldn't leave much room for other programs if I want to run a few at a time)

Windows 7 at full pelt on it's own is only about 800-900MB.

Yes and a lot of it.

I have a 2GB system, and 7 is loads faster than Vista. Vista on my machine occasionally felt like I was dialing up Word on a 2800kb modem.

Do they deserve respect? No. Not as a game company.

The thread is titled 'Does MS deserve ANY respect' so yes.

As a game company, what do you not respect? Then with that, do you then also lack respect for Sony for the same issues? And what about Nintendo, who pretty much admitted to leaving behind what used to be their core gamer, and focusing almost solely on another demographic? What will it take for you to respect a game company?

Mostly just curious, I respect all 3, they all do whatever they need to get ahead in the business world, and I can respect that.

The topic is about MS why u bring sony and nintendo here?

Copying ideas is not the worst thing MS has done.

The post above me (scruffybunny) gave a lot reasons why MS should not been respected, but the worse clearly being how they make business crushing competition.

If you're interested, read the (old) Roberto Di Cosmo's book about it : Hijacking the world, the dark side of Microsoft

Whats the difference between Sony and Microsoft? The overall success they have had at being assholes. Just because Sony aren't as good at being assholes doesn't mean they wouldn't have acted exactly the same in exactly the same position.

Quite ironic since you're as much a PS3 advertisement as anything else here.

I know you didn't specifically bring up Sony as well, but your singature brings them into it.

I was talking about MS as a whole company. Actually, more about their computing division, since it's what it was in the beginning, a computing company.

As a computer engineer, and computing enthusiast, to me, MS is the worst thing that ever happened to computing.
You may disagree, that's my opinion.

And you brought Sony in the discussion, don't use my sig to hide behind it. My post was only related to MS.
But since you brought it, you really should get informed more about the way MS does business before comparing it to Sony's. Read a few things about it. Don't think it only get all the hate only because it's hype to hate at MS. They deserve more.

They will know Helgan belongs to Helghasts

Whislt I still prefer mac osx I have a new W7 pc at home and its a very decent OS.

The irrational hate for some companies is getting rediculous. Nintendo, Sony, Apple and Micrsoft have all done extremely unethical and monopolistic things in the past. Enjoy products. Don't Enjoy companies.
