I'm not suprised at that. I got a full version of vista cheap with my processor and I'm regretting that. I'll learn about being an early adopter one of these days. I don't rember XP being this bad at launch. I took a performance hit in everything I was playing when I changed OS. Unfortunatly I cant find my XP disc or I'd go back. I was hoping things had gotten better. I updated grapics and sound drivers the week before to play HL2 Episode 2 and noticed marked improvement especially in sound.

Griffin try setting Shaders Quality to high in the advanced menu. I was having the exact same problems you are describing and that fixed it for me.

Are you able to disable many of the graphical features and such in Vista that can slow it down? Also, that sucks that there are still problems with software and compatbility.

I really dont know Vista that well yet. I've never been tecnically savy when it comes to windows. I havent really spent much time learning the ins and outs of an OS since DOS.

@IllegalPaladin,

Saves aren't based on checkpoints, you can save whenever you want and load whenever you want. Actually, hit F5 for autosave and F8 for autoload if you don't want to hassle with naming the file (which you can do also if you don't want the save overwritten with your next autosave).

Haha, I just played DX10 Settings on DX9. Looks great.

Yeah, I finally have a sig.

My PC:
Q6600
8800GTS 320mb
4GB of ram
Dual booting on Vista and XP.
it runs far better on XP then Vista, but the game does look better with some things set to Very High.

just to see how it looked I set everything to Very High, It crashed :(

I was really impressed at how well the game played, the nano suit is a great idea. I've only really just started experimenting with the different tactics of using it. the little touches with all the extra physics effecting trees and undergrowth really makes the world more believable.

I'm going to try out the very high "patched" settings for DX9 tomorrow.

Yeah, i got it run all on max, brilliant graphics - the only problem i had was the download - it kept crashing at 400Mb so i got it Internode games network, worked fine then

My pc specs-
2 ASUS 8800GTX in SLI

4 GB corsair Dominator ram

Intel core 2 quad q6600 overclocked to 3.2 ghz per core

Asus striker motherboard

The story is interesting but it isn't going to win any awards from what I have seen. That might change though since we really haven't heard much of anything about the full storyline yet.

Still though this, CoD4, GoW, UT3, etc....Nov is the month of the PC shooter fan for sure...way too much to play.

So it's actually a good game, in addition to looking better than real life? Now you got me interested!

You wouldn't suppose a computer capable of running it would be reasonably affordable in a year or so? I'm getting a 500-700€ computer next year, and it might be just barely too slow for this monster if I go cheap on the flashy bits.

If my math is correct 500€ = about $725. If computer parts are similarly priced there by the time you are purchasing your computer you should be able to easily purchase a computer that can play it at or near max settings in DX9 and/or possibly high on DX10.

The rig I am using cost me ~$800 about a year ago and is able to play the demo in DX9 at 30-40FPS with max detail settings for DX9 (which is high detail 1200x800). I can't make promises for the prices in the future but you will be able to get some impressive eye candy for that kind of cash.

The one catch is you will need to build the rig yourself. If you have at least a limited understanding of computer hardware you can probably be walked through it but I don't advise it unless you are totally comfortable with it.
