Forums - Sony - PS3 absolutely HAMMERED by press

Honestly people laugh at Sony for their loses yet Microsoft is still -7 billion for their game division (havent seen latest report yet) and they are in courts yet again over the 360 to extend the warrenty over all destroyed Games/Movies/CDs and the DVD drives, and the HD-DVD drive and HD-DVDs. Microsoft is on the verge of losing and this will be an even bigger hit then the 1 billion from the RROD case. The costs could easily top 3 billion dollars.

Nice diversion.  OP: "Sony got some bad press due to the Q2 report."  ssj12: "Hey guys, remember the 360 RROD issue? and bla bla bla, lawsuit, bla bla, 3 billion bla bla"  ;)

Its about balancing the playing field, all consoles have their negatives. They just aren't as widely talked about.

But this is about the bad press Sony recieved due to the losses reported from the gaming division. Meanwhile, MS reported over four billion in profit, with their gaming divison making a couple hundred million.

So the press is doing a perfectly adaquet job considering the recently released finacial reports. If we were to go by your logic, then it'd make just as much sense to bring up the profits the PS2 made 8 months ago. Not only that, but based on said finacial reports Sony is in far deeper shit than MS, especially considering how the PS3 is still lagging behind significantly.

And LOL @ IGN as a credible news source.

Funny is they also whined about PS2 dragging Sony down due to its expensive hardware back in the early stages of the previous gen.

Funny this is this didn't happen from the mainstream press.

You have to remember that the PS2 never caused the games division to post losses this big. Oh, and the cost of PS2 hardware is a drop in the bucket compared to the PS3.

So by your standard a title of "Disaster of the Day: Sony" from forbes is not mainstream ?

Oh and the profits from PS2 are a drop in the bucket compared to what they can make from Games, PSn, Bluray and movie/music.

That article was about the PS2s launch cost lowering the profits of their electronics division. However, the PS3 nearly a year after launch has posted a significant loss.

The ~25mil the forbes article cites is a joke compared to the >800mil the PS3 has lost them. Sure, they can eventually make up the losses, but that means a large amount of software sales and hardware sales. Currently the PS3 isn't exactly doing either. Also, the profits from the PS2 are nothing to sneeze at. But nice job bringing up services that have yet to launch, and may never launch.

Yeah, cause the article wasn't about the financial losses the PS3 has incurred, you know, stuff that might matter to investors. Thosearticles just wanted you to regret you're purchase - silly MS funded press.

And? That's not news yet. The Mainstream press is only going to report things after they happen in the videogame world cause it's not that important to them and just filler for the 24 hour news networks. Once they lose i'm sure they'll bring it up... for like a day Then they'll get back to the OJ coverage and asking if America is ready for a Black president while simaltaniously asking if O'Bama is black enough. (Wha?)

half the articles are basically bs anyways. halo 3 isnt the hottest game ou, maybe in console land but I could have sworn Half Life 2: The Orange Box took the title of best game this season away from Halo rather quickly.

As for Sony vs Nintendo and the tech article. They speak more truths then other other two but still spin everything possible towards the current leader. Its the same thing thats going on in the Presidential coverage. Hilary gets 80% of all the attention for Democrats and Guliani gets 80% of all the attention for Republicans. The media always gives a negative spin to the least popular what the producers/editors of the news companies prefer. There is no such thing as balanced media from companies like Fox, CNN, ABC, etc. You have to get your news from sites like IGN and GamePolitics to have balanced views.

According to this site Halo 3 is still outselling Orange Box though it is older.  Also based on my friends list Halo 3 is by far the most played game but of course you wouldn't know that since you don't own one.  Oh yeah you probably mean the PC version is the hottest game because console FPS are so wack compared to your precious PC :).  I rather get news from kotaku or joystiq over ign any day since they typically get it first anyways.  Also ign basically reports the exact thing that gamespot and just about every other video game online site has.  I know because I spend all the day at work checking them out and is funny seeing shit I already read ona  blog appear on those sites.  Only thing they are good for is previews and interviews.

Theres a reason the financial report from sony is a big deal is because its actually showing really bad things. You got to remember, that sony's GAMING DIVISION is reporting a loss. That means that the PS3s costs are even eating up the profits made from PS2,(which at his point is profitable like crazy) which if you remember was supposed to hold over the losses of the PS3.

Not to mention, if you look at the bigger picture, about a year and a half ago, before PS3 came out, Sony was in big trouble financially(the company as a whole). Hence, it was investors saying it wasnt a big deal because once PS3 comes out, that would bring the company out of its troubles. Unfortunately, that hasnt been the case.

Oh, and finally, for those that are talking about why no one is really talking about the Xbox 360s costs (even though this quarter its the first time its profitable), Microsoft has never been overly worried about their game division. Their game division is just a drop in the bucket compared to the revenue they make elsewhere( only about 160 million bucks of profit compared to quarterly profit of 4.3 BILLION). This is the reason why they talk more about Nintendo and Sony's gaming divisions in these articles, as Nintendo is pretty much strictly a video game company, and Sony has been relying on its gaming division as of the past couple of years.

Im actually meaning 360 + PC. If Halo 3 released on PC at the same time it would have bombed hard on PC. Sctually releasing when DX 10.1 is released wouldnt save it on pC either.. Halo 2 bombed extremely bad on PC.

MSNBC is actually pretty unbiased.  Politically anyway.  As for the news stations.  They arn't biased towards the Wii because it's winning.  They're biased towards the Wii because it's something new.  If the PS3 was winning now they really wouldn't be able to spin BS as eaisly cause it would just be another "It's a videogame system... it's selling well.  Look at how cool it looks." type story that might not make the cut other then as an afternote.  I mean their is Blu-ray but the High def wars don't even seem to break mainstream news coverage on TV other then a couple seconds when some giant theatre switches allegiance.  The reason being... most of the people who watch the news are too old to care about Videogames and HD stuff.  The rest are just people who think videogames cause people to kill their kids.  Do a story on a videgame system that's positive and people are gonna change the channel.

Nah, the Wii gets all the positve spin cause it has a good Q Score as far as TV news goes.   Throw some pictures in of some old people playing with their grandchildren developing a bond, some rehab work, all sorts of nice stuff like that.  That keeps people watching.  Even the insane people who think playing GTA makes people kill sit down and say "Oh isn't that nice!  A positive videogame system!"

Overall I think it'll be fairly irrelevent.  Maybe a few Mom's will say "Oh, i'm not buying my son a 400 dollar console that's failing!"  but I mean, Mom's have a hard enough time saying no to their kids the rest of the year, let alone saying no i X-mas.

Its normal ,mediocre people loves to jump on the former leader in problems and most people just follows the bandwagon .The other consoles have their share of problems (paying for online playing ,lack of exclusives not shared with the PC ,red ring of death ,lack of power and lack of third party support for the Wii ,etc etc ).Maybe if things go bad the PS3 will be hammered and wont be the lead plattform now .And some time end of this generation people will start talking about how great was/is the PS3 and that you dont have to pay for online and have a HD reader and that it was a misunderstood console by the mediocre fanboys whot got tricked by MS and Nintendo etc etc .Its a classic .

right...because we always talk about the features of a console from 10 years ago.  We talk about the games, and it will have its share of good games when all is said and done, but so did the N64, dreamcast, saturn, GC etc.

When the console war winner is clear the big games follow.

When all is said and done people will be talking about how blu-ray was a mistake, and how the masses aren't gonna pay $600 for a game console.  Of course there are gonna be some very good games that get overlooked because it wasn't such a popular system, but that isn't anything new for losing systems.

btw diomedes wii was undertracked in europe
