and I can build a custom reader in about a few hours and come up with soldering hacks in a month or less for bypassing protection, not to mention there are guys much better than I am at that type of thing.

Sure, in CAN be done.  Just like the PS3 will be hacked soon as well, just like blu-ray is hacked, DVD, CD, etc.  My point is that - were this done correctly in a propriety encrypted format, a flash mem based delivery system would be no less secure than an optical medium.

Around the Network

Something makes me think that the cost to manufacture a flash cart for a next-gen game would be prohibitively expensive.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

There are three reasons I would prefer flash memory over a disc.

  1. It is silent. A spinning disc does make a sound.
  2. (almost) No heat. A spinning disc creates some heat.
  3. no scratches. I never had one USB stick or whatever that did not work no matter how often I used it. (Delete, write again and again)

And there are 256GB USB-Sticks available right now. Yeah they are expensive as hell, but in 2012 or 2013 when the next gen starts, they will be very cheap.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Digital Distribution and Multiplayer check is the answer imo, for consoles anyways, if you are on PC, well, it's PC.
