SNES - 16,701,578

Sega Saturn - 5,718,628 will be beaten by xmas next year

PS1 - 19,362,986

Nintendo 64 - 5,377,174 will be beaten by xmas next year

Dreamcast - 2,232,028 beaten

PS2 - 22,998,282

Gamecube - 4,024,279 will be beaten by end of this year

Xbox - 477,809 beaten

so that leaves the snes, ps1, and ps2

I can handle that

I didn't say they wouldn't. I just said they couldn't do it at a profit.

Last time I heard they lessen their losses so It's only a matter of time they turn to profit.

I would also like to point out: you said that sofware sales won't help them? Look at uncharted that game already made a lot of profit. Let say they are making 30 out of it. That game already sold 1.38M so 1380000 X 30 = 41400000 already. I think Uncharted 2 was 21m to be made. That's already a 20 million profit and still counting. Sony chose to risk more money to gain market share bec. softwares can lead to profit.

@Boneitis
Do you consider yourself a troll?

If the answer is "no", then why are you taking of your time to make a thread claiming PS3 is doing "awful" in Japan when in reality it's doing much better now than in times past, and still well ahead of its primary competitor? :\

To Boneitis :

Your arguments fail miserably.

"The PS3 is struggliing to catch up with the likes of the Gamecube, Saturn, and N64."

As I said before, PS3 is not done selling and will go on to outsell all those and become the 6th best selling console of all time in Japan. In the process of this, it will become the most successful 2nd place console in Japan.

It will do ALL this while maintaining a rather high price point - Huge launch price and STILL relatively high price for a console of its life time.

"None of which were huge in Japan nor did they lose billions in the process."

As said in a recent news article, PS3 consoles would be profitable in 2010. You seem to have forgotten that a re-designed PS3 console has launched, with obvious plans of reducing manufacturing costs in the long run.

"I'm just a little tired of hearing how great the PS3 is doing in Japan. When in reality there isn't much to boast about."

Why are you tired of hearing it ? Maybe because you are a troll. Its the highest selling home console right now. That IS something to boast about.

FFXIII and GT5 will also boost sales considerably. GT5P did launch with a boost of PS3 sales, but will that prevent another boost from happening ?

You also claim that if all consoles sell for a loss, they will sell bucket loads - 99$ Arcade and 199$ elite. But did the XBOX360 sell as well as the PS3 did @ 299$ for the lowest price model ? NO ? I wonder why ?

How much would the PS3 sell if its @ 99$ or 199$ ?

Recap - PS3 has sold huge amounts considering its high price (relatively), even though they are suffering from losses, PS3 will be profitable in 2010.

PS3 selling huge amounts with slim launch will help reduce cost of producing an individual unit. The more they sell  - the more they produce at a time. This actually reduces the total cost. Therefore,

Sell more = Reduce losses.

I smell good times and good sales ahead for the PS3. Do you like that smell Boneitis ? PS3 lead in others within weeks, Sales exploding in Japan...

(For your information, XBOX 360 was also sold for a loss in its early stages and MS lost a lot of money due to the RROD fiasco.)

Ha before it was 'PS3 can't sell!' to 'PS3 can't make a profit' ?

Anyway love fanboys ^_^

Why is everyone leaving NES out

"And yet, I've realized that maybe living a "decent" life means you won't ever have a "good" life."

1) Japanese perfer handhelds in this generation for some reason, so consoles are selling uch worse than they did in last gens. wii is the market leader and it only sold 8 million.
2) PS3 was at least 2 times more expensive than those consoles at launch and its still more expensive now.
3 ) PS3 didnt had Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo, the true system sellers in Japan.
4 ) PS3 is outselling 360 3:1 in Japan
5 ) PS3 is outselling Wii in weekly sales
6 ) PS3 has a very good chance to outsell the Wii in Japan in 2009

1) Like I said, the only it can get to 6th place is by taking record losses. And that's how business works! Losing money = Success.

2) By then other consoles will be cheaper. And ofcourse other consoles are making a profit now.

3) Yes, its because I'm a troll. How could I possibly respond to that? Big sales aren't worth boasting about with record losses.

4) Am I denying those game will boost sales? I'm not opposed to them selling units.

5) The PS3 is selling better because its a better deal at $299. It has the HDD, Bluray, Wifi, free online, etc. Its such a great deal that Sony loses money with each unit sold. Now if Sony could sell it for what its worth, now that would be worth boasting about!

6) PS3 has sold huge amounts? I wasn't aware. Doesn't look like Sony is happy with sales. Isn't that why its gone down 50% in 3 years and still being sold at a loss? I've heard the PS3 is going to be profitable for a couple years now, is 2010 official?

7) Here's some better math... Sell it at a profit = profits. Sony wanted to make the ultimate gaming machine, but the masses chose economical. Sony made some bad decisions. In hopes of keeping the brand alive its costing them big.

8) I smell... record losses to continue. Is Guinness following?

9) RROD cost MS a billion. Xbox Live has generated a over a billion in revenue and will probably generate billions more for the life of the 360.

Argue more if you'd like. Maybe I'll agree something.

1) Plausable. Maybe they just don't care for either HD console.

2) Lets agree Sony made horrible mistakes.

3) I think those games get more credit than they deserve. The FF series has gone way down in sales. GT probably isn't the console mover you think it is. But we'll see I guess.

4) Who's denying that?

5) Its got a long way to catch up.

6) Possible, not good for Sony if it doesn't. Their biggest game is coming.

PS3 will double it's sales and win the second part of this gen over the Wii in Japan.
