Forums - Sales - What if the X360 and PS3 launched at the same time?

This is what would have happened, possibly even more in favor of PS3:

You think the 360 at launch would have struggled with the PS3 if it launched with Gears of War?

How?

Not to mention, they'd have Halo 3 in its 2nd year...

Lastly, with an extra year they would have had time to fix RRoD / slightly improve on the hardware. A more patient Microsoft would have been an entirely different beast, far from the graph you just put up (which heavily favors the PS3).

well that how things are, sales heavily favors the ps3, without they really happening we can't predict an outcome, by 2005 everybody  though the ps3 was going to reign again, until they showed the price.

i think and those numbers also count with gears and halo 3 sales bump. so things wouldn't have been much different. aside rrod. people still got 360 with RROD.

Sales do not heavily the PS3, only the graph he put up did, because he's comparing the 360's 2005 with the PS3's 2006, 06 with 07, and so on. The graph counts as if Gears of War would still release in its 2nd year (e.g. it would launch 2007), Halo 3 in its 3rd (launch 2008), etc.

I agree we can't predict an outcome. I'm just saying, I highly doubt it would have followed the "from launch" graphs, seeing as how those graphs have Microsoft competing with a Sony that is operating a year in the future.

Tagged for later, im to lazy to argue numbers right now. :/

Then Sony would probably be beating it, or it'd be a virtual tie. Unfortunately for Sony though, that didn't happen.

Microsoft had ZERO competition for an entire year! You think that didn't help it out more than Gears and Halo? Please...

No competition = "I want a next gen system. Lets see, I can pick from a 360, a 360, and a 360. Hm...I'll get a 360!"

Hey look they are about even, but yes, if Microsoft doesnt do something AMAZING and start making a lot more of their own AAA quality IPs next gen, they are done for.

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

No, I don't. What does "I want a next gen system" even mean? People care more about the hardware than the games?

Also, RRoD played a huge role in damaging the 360. It was present due to Microsoft's rush to release the console, and who can say how they would have done without it. That's 1 billion $ they don't need to pay, and no customers scared off from shoddy hardware.

Either way, it's all debatable. I still think the race would have been pretty close, with the 360 keeping the lead for the majority of the time, swinging to the PS3's favor this holiday.

PS3 actually benefitted from 360's early headstart in terms of software R&D, and it's first 2 years were much fuller games wise as a result. It's hard to play this sort of "what if", because 360 launching a year later would've also heavily impacted PS3's own library.

Developers now (especially in the west) tend to think of the HD consoles as one platform anyway, each would be signifacntly worse off right now (versus Wii) without the other to spread costs/risks for game makers.

you have to remember the ps3 was much much higher than the xbox360 and it still sold roughly the same amount....

now if they both came out at the same time AND at the same price then it would have been game over for 360

Sony would probably be bankrupt

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Another thing to consider is if 360 had launched a year later, it probably would've used HD-DVD and the battle between formats might've gone differently. Developers would've invested in HD R&D later too, which probably would've benefitted Wii more once it's sales took off.
