Forums - Sony - Guerilla Games interview: Killzone 3 in 2011.. maybe even 2010

Halo and COD release every year around the same time. So are you guys saying to NEVER release a shooter during the later part of the year?

The shooters would need a headstart to be fully effective. That's the way I see it. Releasing games of a certain genre near the release dates of strong brand names within that genre will hinder the games' selling potential.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

^^ Call of Duty would cause it trouble, not Halo. The muliplatform status would hurt Resistance 3 if anything, Halo would not.

Agreed. But you also have to take into account PS360 owners...

How would a new Halo game affect PS3 owners?

PS3 only owners, Halo won't affect them at all. People who own both consoles, on other hand, are probably going to opt for Halo given that it's a stonger brand name, just like how if GT5 and Forza 3 released at the same time, most multi-console owners will purchase GT5. Or is there something I'm missing?

The ones with also a 360, probably yes.

Well for one, Sony would release resistance 3 around any other FPS games. Keep an eye, they know what not to release, and when. Did you not observe what happened with Killzone 2? It was originally going to launch in 2008 but because of fierce comp in the Holiday, they pushed it back.

Like I said, Halo isn't going to affect resistance 3.

They pushed killzone back because 2 of there 1st party shooters would be competing with each other. And sony always like a biggish title releasing in Feb/March.

I think Killzone 3 would sell 3million+ releasing in the holiday season. I see nowt that really would compete with it other than modern warfare and that's releasing this fall. But for killzone 3 i expect either a fall release or Feb/March depending what else they've got in the pipeline.

So when should we start with the hype? who's gonna make the hype train?

Which is still firece compettion, which goes back to my point. Why would they release Resistance 3 up against Halo? And how did Killzone 3 turn into Resistance 3 in the first place?

They wouldnt be putting it up against Halo not how Sony works. Sony have never worked on relying on 1 or 2 major titles in the fall season (probably the first time this year with the likes of MAG, Heavy rain getting pushed back). So you should never put undue importance on any one Sony title. It's just a quality title covering that one particular genre. Next fall a likely lineup will be Twisted metal, Killzone, Starhawk, Agent, Insommniac ip (not resistance supposedly), Media molecule ip, Motorstorm, singstar, buzz, Last guardian etc. Most likely to be million+ sellers but not one that will likely do 6 or 7 million. Intersting how they work in building a quality game in most genres rather than spending really major $ in building a really major brand/s.

no sony, this is not how you build big franchises and this is not how you get the most sales out of each game. This is exactly the reason why Gran Turismo is the only big Sony franchise. They had a chance to make Resistance a big franchise until they released 2 way too early with far too little hype, it also had to compete with Call of Duty, a battle it can't win. Then months later they release Killzone 2, now they're already talking about Killzone 3 (and resistance 3??). Not to mention Motorstorm which they instantly destroyed by releasing the sequel 1 year after the original. Releasing inferior games (don't just mean graphics) on PSP didn't help the franchises either.
Spread out your games, take care of your franchises, build up the hype. This is why Nintendo is so successful with their franchises, and even MS has done a better job.

Again they're doing the right thing this gen with Gran Turismo too, but I can't say the same about many of the others.
