Well...I really don't know what to say. That was a lot of speculation...horrible disfigured speculation at that. Sony's initial strategy was to release a technical monster, then expect brand name, and specs to sell the machine...well they failed. Hence the price-drop and the slim. Those two were basically an admittance from Sony that their initial strategy failed. And good for them, perhaps now they can start pulling in some profits...

What pitiful logic.

Saying a price-drop and SKU change are indicators of failed strategy would imply the DS and PS2 had that problem.  Good luck with that.

I agree, Sony has always done a slim and pricecuts are hardly surprsing.

More idicative of a failed strategy is marketshare and profits.

What pittiful logic. Neither the DS or the PS2 were bleeding horribly, nor were their pricecuts as large as this last one. Sony NEEDED to do the substantual pricedrop if they expected to even stay afloat. I would think you would be overjoyed that Sony finally bucked their pride and went for a strategy that actually works. *rolls eyes*

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

The alternative would be to do what nintendo did and release another standard definition console but the problem is that the ps2 already saturated that with 140 million sold.

They changed to the slim because they saw an opportunity to use the 45nm Cell chip from the original 90nm, its cooler, less power hungry and uses half the materials. And with this change of processor, it affect the rest of the system, they could have put the smaller Cell into the old box, but they remade, re-branded (Slim), re-marketed and re-hyped the PS3. So we end up with a smaller console that is less power hungry, less noisy and cheaper and a lot easier to promote.

They would have lost a lot less if they didn't include the BR drive but hell they won that format war, and ffs if blu-ray will be as pervasive as regular DVD or CDs are, thats a shit load of discs for a lot of years. Of course DVDs will be with us for a long time still, I don't see local ISPs for example handing out Blu-ray 25GB discs with 10Mbs of marketing bullshit inside anytime soon. That is a long ass tail strategy with the BR format.

If HD-DVD won, Sony would have been fucked, having spent so much trying to own that market just to be forced to use HD-DVD themselves. In that sense, the financial loses is worth it, just like the Microsoft loses were worth it, because they beat the Playstation at its own game, well this gen is not over yet. It'll be fun to see what happens.

blu-ray also is one aspect that gives ps3 a tech edge over the 360 not just for movies, but for the actual games.

I couldn't agree with you more. Sony won the format war, partly because of the PS3, but it's also part of the reason why the PS3 was so high priced, and didn't sell as well as it's predicesors. For all intents and purposes, Bluray actually hurt the PS3.

Sony has no real strategy in regards to the PS3.

A $5 billion dollar loss on the PS3 since its launch and rising. Market share falling from above 75% to below 25% - more than 50% fall in total market share from last generation. Sony's game division made $600 million loss in the last financial quarter. Celebrating this as a success. I am lost for words. Microsoft on the other hand made a $300 million profit in the last financial quarter.

There has been no real evidence to indicate whether the PS3 Slim is actually selling for a profit or loss. If it is selling for a loss it would be further increasing the losses made on the PS3 since its launch.

The PS3 has to last for 10 years because it would take about that time for the PS3 hardware losses to be completely erased.

PS3 is on track now according to Sony fans that it will eventually outsell the XBox 360 in total sales. But at what cost? Who really cares? Anyway the Wii will have doubled the sales of the PS3. PS3 will finish second in console sales numbers. PS3 will finish last in profitability for this generation.

...yes, Sony does have a strategy. Their first one failed, and they are now using a sane one, however it could be too late. Suffice to say, If given the chance to go back, I think tthey would use a differant strategy altogether...and then this gen would be very differant.
