Forums - Sony - PS3 Strategy is Starting to Pay Off

10 year plan baby!

Sony didn't get where they are by being idiots, they knew what they were doing. They have the 10 year plan why would they want to offer everything they have to everyone in the first couple years, there slowly taking over.

Is that why they dropped the price by 200 € / 33% in Europe before the PS3 even had its first holiday season?

If these are slow price drops it should be amusing to see fast price drops.

those are small price drops, it have 500$ - 400$ -300$ price cuts and sony as a whole didn't loose money until the depression start to hit hard.

and compared to the 360 it have 2 price cuts in europe in 2008- they are small.

In Europe the PS3 launched for 600 € in March 2007. 7 months later, it cost 400 € (and lost 20 GB of hard drive space in the process).

If this is a slow price cut, I'm Santa Claus.

hi santa.

there was a ps3 500$ the 20gb version 60gb version was 600$.  as price cut  it went down 100$ replaced by 40gb,400$, but the more expensive 600$ also have a cut.

u are making look like ps3 only had a 40gb version at 400$, the more expensive 80gb was still 500$+.

it took 2 years for the ps3 to go from 400$ to 300$ of course when your console cost more to manufacture price cut can be seen as bigger, 360 have way more price cuts compared 360 which had 2 price cuts in the region.

wtf@ all-

360 can be bought for 199$, u guys are comparing the cheapest ps3 to the most expensive 360 in price cuts.

ps3 highest model was launched at 600$ most expensive now it's 400-350$ 160gb-250gb

lowest was 500$ it's now 300$ after 3 years.

elite was $479.99  April 29, 2007 in North America and it's now 300$.

arcade 299$ in 2007 now 199$ but looks like it's going to be 100-150$ soon

Xoj why are you posting dollar prices when I was talking about Europe? In Europe, the 60 GB PS3 was discontinued together with the price cut.

Here, I'll make a drawing:

March 2007: you can buy a PS3 for 600 €.
October 2007: you can buy a PS3 for 400 € (after the discontinued model's stocks run out).

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

good points, i agree

Huh?  Could you try to speak clearer english?  Also, you are completely ignoring his point.  600€ to 400€ is a drop of 33% in the first 7 months.  Why are you only giving US prices when you yourself do not live in the US and that is not what he is referring to.  Either way, the PS3 went from $600 to $300 (or 350 if you count the new 250GB Slims), a drop of $250-300 in just under 3 years, while the 360 only dropped $100 overall on any of its SKU's in 4 years, using the US region you are quoting prices from (Except for the Elite whose price really never was justified until recently.  It was a pure profit SKU so dropping it to replace the Pro SKU really didn't cost them anything and was the same as removing the Elite and upping the Pro's HDD).  It doesn't matter the number of cuts, but the price that was cut....  You can't use the US pricing where you think it suits your argument then claim the 360 had more cuts in Europe than the PS3 without even trying to negate his argument.

Let me spell this out for you:

November 2005 Arcade(Core)/Premium(Pro):  $299/399

November 2009 Arcade/Elite(Pro):  $199/299

Stop trying to compare the Arcade launch (renamed Core with a few packins) to it's price a year later with the Elite launch to it's price now.  The Elite now is the Pro.  The only reason they didn't discontinue the Elite is because now it has the illusion of something better for less money.  The Pro with a 120GB at $300 would have seemed less cool or valuable than an "Elite" with 120GB at $300.  Their profit margins with the new Elite SKU compared to the 60GB Pro are nearly identical save for a couple dollars for that larger HDD.

i live in pananma latin america, and we use dollars here ;), and now u are saying numbers of cuts don't matter.

ps3 price for me have been around 100$ for sku, highest priced model, and lowest priced model. and the ps3 remained 400$ lowest price for 2 years.

If the trend continues at the end of the year the gap between PS3 and 360 will fall under 5 million, at the end of march Xbox will only lead by 3 million console, so yeah Sony's strategy is a good one.

Your math misleads you.

At the end of the year if no fluctuation in the trends happens the lead will be ~6.4 Million still.  Then if it still continues on through March with no change, the lead would be ~5.4 Million still.

And that's completely disregarding the fact that in the Holiday months, price is a bigger factor and it is in these holiday months that the Arcade 360 sales will skyrocket in US and Others.  So the gap may decrease even slowly than the current trend once December hits.  Then after March and sales start to die down for the summer, the sales gap will decrease even slower.  If MS does nothing at all until the Fall of 2010 I bet there lead would still be ~4 million or more, and that's being very generous and taking into account a few weeks of hardware bumps from GT5.
